The grieving never ends for Gold Star Families. The last three anniversaries, while the soulless wreck of many planted himself in the Oval Office, have been relentlessly awful. This year, the families of those killed at Abbey Gate, got some of what they needed. President Donald Trump invited them to the White House and signed a proclamation in honor of the Nation’s treasure. Minor in the scheme of things but long overdue.
Everything about the Afghanistan Withdrawal, the timing, the location of the base chosen, the State Department’s part, everything was a disaster. Botched doesn’t cut it. The Supplemental Department of Defense Review “Kabul Airport Attack Review Reaffirms Initial Findings, Identifies Attacker” absolved everyone of accountability and issued no new findings. So typical of our sclerotic Deep State. From that DOD report:
A supplemental review of the original investigation into the 2021 suicide bombing attack that killed 13 U.S. service members and roughly 170 Afghan civilians at Hamid Karzai International Airport’s Abbey Gate has reaffirmed the military’s findings of the initial investigation and identifies the attacker.
The report ends:
The official closed out the briefing by pointing out that the supplemental review team has photos of the 13 U.S. service members who lost their lives in the Abbey Gate attack posted in the team’s office in such a manner that the photos are the first thing the team members see in the morning, and the last thing they see as they depart for the evening.
“This is to always remind us of the fallen service members and the importance of what we’re doing,” the official said.
“This is to honor them.”
Cold comfort. In addition to the 13 killed, 45 personnel were wounded. Fifteen were wounded severely enough to require treatment at Walter Reed Army Medical Center.
The inauguration of Donald Trump on January 20, 2025 went a long way to reorienting our military. Today’s visit to the White House by the family members of those killed at Abbey Gate should help reassure the families of those who have loved ones serving.
After signing Executive Orders in the morning and meeting with the President of South Korea in the afternoon, Mr. Trump met with the families of those killed at Abbey Gate in the early evening. From the Washington Examiner:
President Donald Trump met with the Gold Star families of the 13 U.S. service members killed in the Abbey Gate bombing and signed a proclamation honoring the service members’ sacrifices on Monday, a day before the fourth anniversary of the devastating bombing.
“As our Nation solemnly marks four years since the attack at Abbey Gate, we honor the memory of the 13 brave souls and every military service member to ever die in the line of duty — and we renew our resolve to protect American lives, defend American interests, and uphold American sovereignty,” Trump’s proclamation said.
An ISIS-K bomber detonated a suicide bomb at Abbey Gate, which is on the outskirts of Hamid Karzai International Airport, on Aug. 26, 2021. U.S. and allied troops were evacuating people amid the Taliban’s rise to power, as the U.S. military’s mission in Afghanistan was weeks from ending. Thirteen U.S. service members and about 170 civilians were killed in the blast.
Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth was also in the Oval Office for the meeting on Monday afternoon.
In May, Hegseth ordered a new investigation into the Afghanistan withdrawal. However, it’s unclear how the review would differ from the ones the military has already done.
“I would anticipate middle of 2026, that’s how thorough of a review we’re doing,” Hegseth said. “Hopefully a little sooner, but we’re going into everything to get an understanding of what happened.”
Abdul Rahman al Logari was identified as the Abbey Gate bomber. Logari was aided by Mohammad Sharifullah, who was captured by Pakistani authorities and extradited to the United States in March 2025.
After the one I showed you above, anything will be an improvement. Right, General Milley? Right, Antony Blinken? Right, Lloyd Austin? More:
The U.S. service members killed in the bombing included 11 Marines: Lance Cpl. David Espinoza, 20; Sgt. Nicole Gee, 23; Staff Sgt. Darin Taylor Hoover, 31; Cpl. Hunter Lopez, 22; Lance Cpl. Dylan R. Merola, 20; Lance Cpl. Rylee McCollum, 20; Lance Cpl. Kareem Nikoui, 20; Cpl. Daegan William-Tyeler Page, 23; Sgt. Johanny Rosario Pichardo, 25; Cpl. Humberto Sanchez, 22; and Lance Cpl. Jared Schmitz, 20.
Army Staff Sgt. Ryan Knauss, 23, and Navy Hospital Corpsman Maxton Soviak, 22, were also killed.
We can never forget these names. Trump even thanked the media for being respectful to the families:

The world doesn’t know what it has awakened in the U.S. military. After two failed wars and capped by a catastrophe like Abbey Gate, the most bitter ending to the campaign imaginable.
It has no earthly idea what’s risen from the depths. Americans love to win. And normally I’d… https://t.co/rzYG9HoKDL

After the Proclamation was signed, how gratifying for the families it must have been to have Vice President J.D. Vance speak as a Marine and Vice President:

The beginning of rectifying a wrong. God Bless the Families of the Abbey Gate 13.
