As President Donald Trump approaches the end of his final term in 2028, speculation is growing over who will inherit leadership of the “Make America Great Again” movement. With Trump constitutionally barred from seeking a third term, Knewz.com has learned that two key figures, Vice President J.D. Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio, are increasingly viewed as front-runners.
Vance emerges as a clear frontrunner

According to the prediction market Polymarket, Vance currently holds a 55% chance of becoming the next Republican nominee, compared to 10% for Rubio. Vance, a former senator elected in 2023 before becoming vice president, has become one of the most visible champions of Trump’s populist agenda. Rubio, a longtime senator from Florida and former Trump critic, has aligned himself with the administration as secretary of state and embraced major MAGA policies. Both have been loyal allies but represent different strands of Republican politics. It is worth noting that Trump himself sits at just 5%, a reflection of the constitutional two-term limit on the presidency.
Trump weighs in

Trump recently said in a statement that Vance was the probable choice to succeed him, though he stressed it was still too early to know for certain. “Well, I think most likely in all fairness, he’s the vice president,” Trump said. “I think Marco [Rubio] is also somebody that maybe would get together with J.D. in some form. I also think we have incredible [other] people. … So it’s too early obviously to talk about it, but certainly he’s doing a great job, and he would be probably favored at this point.” Notably, Trump’s comments marked a shift from February, when he bluntly answered “no” when asked whether Vance was his heir, even while calling him “very capable.”
Vance downplays talks of succession

Vance has downplayed talks of succession, telling reporters that his focus remains on governing. “My view on the politics of 2028 is I’m not really focused even on the election in 2026, much less one two years after that. And if we do a good job for the American people, the politics will take care of itself,” he said in a statement.
Rubio’s endorsement

Speaking to Fox News about Vance potentially running in 2028, Rubio said, “I think he’s doing a great job as vice president. He’s a close friend, and I hope he intends to do it, but I know it’s kind of early.”
