Texas shook up the national political scene just weeks ago after the Department of Justice asked the state to consider redistricting.
Texas complied, and now the state Senate has passed a redistricting map, and Senate Democrats are somewhat less than impressed, as Breitbart News reported.
The bill was passed by the House on Wednesday of last week, despite Democrats’ frustrations in that chamber of the state legislature as well.
Democrats describe the newly passed map as a power grab by President Donald Trump, whose party stands to gain several congressional districts.
The passage
The bill passed along party lines in the House, which was an 88-55vote, and in the Senate with a vote of 18-11and, which means the new map will likely offer Republicans a majority in five more districts in the upcoming election.
“Congrats to the Texas House on passing the One Big Beautiful Map,” Texas Gov. Greg Abbott said in a statement, referring to the new map by a Trump-ordained nickname.
“It will make Texas, and Congress, a brighter shade of Red.”
“Dangerous precedent”
This was not without dramatic turmoil, however, as Sen. Alvarado said in a letter to Lt. Governor Dan Patrick that the bill was an “extraordinary attempt to redraw the lines in the middle of the decade,” and that it would create a “dangerous precedent where politicians could redraw maps to pick their voters before every election.”

Before the passage of the legislation, Texas Rep. Gene Wu (D), the Texas House Democratic Caucus leader, proposed an amendment to the redistricting.
According to Wu, it would take some of the sting out of the mid-decade redistricting if it came along with Attorney General Pam Bondi releasing all the unclassified records related to disgraced financier Jeffrey Epstein.
While Epstein might have passed in 2019, Wu’s amendment did not pass, and the map went through his chamber without the unrelated Bondi demand included.
More Democrat response
“Texas Republicans just protected Donald Trump and Jeffrey Epstein’s secrets. Instead of demanding answers about Trump’s decades with Epstein — they engineered a coverup,” Texas House Democrats said in a statement.
“Remember this when they talk about protecting the innocent. When given the chance, they protected predators instead.”
Other states have also gotten involved, with California Gov. Gavin Newsom saying in a statement after the vote: “It’s on, Texas.”
