Chuck Schumer knows the Democrat Party base is furious with him.
Schumer knows he needs to shift the tides inside his party.
But now Chuck Schumer picked one fight about the Epstein files that blew up in his face.
As West Wing Daily reports:
Just one short year ago, Republicans were the ones clamoring for more information to be released about Jeffrey Epstein, and Democrats thought it was a conspiracy theory and wanted to move on.
But now that Donald Trump is in power and seems very reluctant to release anything about Epstein, the politics of Jeffrey Epstein have completely changed.
Now it is Democrats who are pushing, at least publicly, for Epstein information to be released, while many Republicans, though certainly not all, have clammed up.
Some of the Republicans who have pushed for Epstein files to be released, like Kentucky Rep. Thomas Massie, have been subjected to brutal attacks from their fellow party members.
Things have changed politically on this, due almost exclusively to Donald Trump and the decisions that he has made.
Now, Chuck Schumer has made a decision on Jeffrey Epstein that would have been almost unimaginable just a short year ago but in fact is happening.
According to Axios, “Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) and other Senate Democrats announced Wednesday that they’ll use an obscure federal law known as the ‘Rule of Five’ in an attempt to force the Justice Department to release more documents related to the Jeffrey Epstein case.”
“Congressional Democrats are trying to capitalize on the Epstein issue, which has dogged President Trump and opened fissures between him and some of his most ardent supporters.”
Schumer is trying to hurt Trump here, and perhaps he is expecting to find Trump’s name in the files that are ultimately released on Epstein.
Whether Schumer personally knows what’s in the files, or is simply guessing, is an open question.
The article continues, “The ‘Rule of Five’ law allows any five members of the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee to request federal agencies to provide information about ‘any matter within the jurisdiction of the committee.’”
“He also questioned why Trump has failed to release the documents after campaigning on their release, and after top officials such as FBI Director Kash Patel and Attorney General Pam Bondi said they’d release additional information earlier this year.”
It’s clear that a lot of people are very hesitant to push too hard for the release of the Epstein files, and Schumer himself has been pretty quiet about it up until now.
But he seems to believe that the politics of it, at least for himself, now favor pushing for the release of the files, at least publicly.
Whether he is going to go through with these types of aggressive maneuvers to get the files released will be an interesting thing to watch in D.C., and it will tell people a lot.
It does seem like, at some point, the files are going to get released, even if some powerful people in the federal government don’t want them to.
