President Donald Trump has described Washington, D.C., as a city in decline, warning it has become “one of the most dangerous cities anywhere in the world.” However, Knewz.com has learned that a review of police, FBI and city data shows crime has been trending downward in the nation’s capital, unlike the president’s claims.
Trump orders increased federal presence in D.C.

Recently, Trump ordered an “increased presence” of federal law enforcement in D.C. following an attack on a former government official. The directive followed a March executive order to “Make the District of Columbia Safe and Beautiful.” The president also plans to hold a press conference focused on public safety in the city. On his Truth Social account, he said that the event “will, essentially, stop violent crime in Washington, D.C.,” adding that the capital “will soon be one of the safest.” White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt echoed the message, stating, “Washington, D.C., is an amazing city, but it has been plagued by violent crime for far too long. President Trump has directed an increased presence of federal law enforcement to protect innocent citizens. There will be no safe harbor for violent criminals in D.C. President Trump is committed to making our nation’s capital safer for its residents, lawmakers and visitors from all around the world.”
Make Washington, D.C., Great Again!

Writing on Truth Social recently, Trump promised to host a press conference that would “essentially, stop violent crime in Washington, D.C.” He added the capital had “become one of the most dangerous cities anywhere in the world” but would “soon be one of the safest!!!” He added in another post, “I will take care of our cherished Capital, and we will make it, truly, GREAT AGAIN! Before the tents, squalor, filth, and Crime, it was the most beautiful Capital in the World. It will soon be that again.”
What the numbers show

The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Columbia said in January that violent crime in 2024 fell to a 30-year low. Police data shows violent crime is down 26% so far this year compared with the same period last year. That includes a 12% decline in homicides, a 28% decrease in robberies, a 20% drop in assaults with a dangerous weapon and a 37% reduction in carjackings. The FBI reported in August that the number of crimes against persons in Washington fell from 23,914 in 2023 to 22,320 in 2024. Assault offenses made up the vast majority of cases at 21,437, followed by 655 s** offenses, 179 homicides and 49 kidnappings. D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser acknowledged a crime spike in 2023 but told MSNBC, “This is not 2023, this is 2025 and we’ve done that by working with the community, working with the police, working with our prosecutors, and, in fact, working with the federal government.”
69th on the list of the 100 most dangerous cities in the world

It has been reported that Washington ranks 69th on a World Atlas list of the 100 most dangerous cities in the world, based on overall crime. However, it is worth noting that the list also found that other major U.S. cities have higher crime rates than Washington including Detroit and Chicago. Furthermore, reports have mentioned that nationally, homicides have been declining. A The Washington Post review of 100 large U.S. police departments found killings dropped by more than 30%.
