Stacy Abrams, former Georgia gubernatorial candidate, and political commentator Ezra Klein recently explored President Donald Trump’s influence over the MAGA movement on Abrams’ podcast, describing it as nearly religious in nature and imbued with a “mystical power.”
The discussion quickly attracted attention online, sparking debate over how Trump’s authority is perceived by his supporters.
During the episode, Klein explained, “Donald Trump’s impulses have become nearly religious emanations from a figure viewed within his own coalition as … mystic, having come back through the court cases and the assassination attempts.”
He suggested that Trump’s power extends beyond conventional political authority, with followers treating him more like a spiritual leader than a president.
Abrams expanded on the point, questioning whether elections could truly remove Trump from power if he were regarded as a “grand ayatollah.”
“If it is true that he’s a grand ayatollah, that mystical power extends and can be—you know—he can anoint his, you know, his prophets and he can remain in power even if he doesn’t hold the title of president,” she said.
She added that under such circumstances, elections might offer limited solutions.
“If that’s the case, then there’s no relief from this that is achieved by election. Especially if we are truly in an authoritarian regime where elections are not real,” Abrams stated, citing recent redistricting efforts in Texas and political maneuvers in California as examples of the changing influence between red and blue states.
Abrams has consistently criticized President Trump’s policies, particularly his approach to immigration and federal law enforcement.
She has condemned the administration’s deportation policies, arguing that they unfairly target communities and rely on fear-based tactics.
Abrams has also opposed federal interventions in Democratic-led cities, viewing them as overreach that can undermine local governance and civil liberties.
These positions provide context for her recent podcast remarks about Trump’s “mystical power” over the MAGA movement.
The episode aired as Trump remains active on multiple fronts, including his recent federal deployments in Washington, D.C., where he temporarily placed local law enforcement under federal oversight and mobilized National Guard units to address violent crime.
He has also engaged in international efforts, reportedly participating in discussions aimed at advancing a peace agreement between Ukraine and Russia, Trending Politics reports.
Social media responses to Abrams’ statements were swift and frequently critical.
On X, one user wrote, “Check your meds, Stacey. They got the dosage screwed up,” while another remarked, “the tds brain just goes in circles, it runs out of ideas.”
“Stacy must be drinking with Kamala again,” another user joked.
Abrams’ political history adds further context.
She notably refused to concede the 2018 Georgia gubernatorial race after losing to Republican Brian Kemp, repeatedly citing alleged election irregularities and voter suppression concerns, which drew widespread conservative criticism.
The podcast episode has reignited partisan discussion about Trump’s influence and the way followers perceive his authority.
Observers noted that social media continues to amplify reactions, shaping public perception and fueling broader debates about political power and commentary.
