Vice President JD Vance defended Texas Republicans’ decision to redraw the state’s congressional map, stating that the move aims to create a more balanced political environment after decades of Democratic gerrymandering. According to Fox News, during an interview on NBC’s “Meet the Press,” host Kristen Welker questioned why Republicans would seek to expand their representation if President Trump’s agenda is “so popular.” Vance responded by pointing to states like Massachusetts, where a significant portion of the electorate voted for Republicans, but no Republicans serve as federal representatives, attributing this to aggressive Democratic district manipulation.
Vance argued that Republicans are simply working to “level the playing field” nationwide, insisting their redistricting efforts are a reaction to long-standing Democratic tactics. He highlighted California as another example, where Governor Gavin Newsom reportedly took measures to adjust the state’s own maps to counteract Republican gains in Texas.
“Well, first of all, Kristen, you have to ask yourself, ‘Why have Democrats gerrymandered their states aggressively over the past ten to 20 years?’” Vance began on the matter. “If you look, for example, at the popular vote in a lot of these states, and Massachusetts, where 32% of the residents of Massachusetts voted for Republicans, zero Republican federal representatives.”
According to Vance, the GOP’s redistricting move in Texas was about ensuring “fairness” rather than seeking partisan advantage, and he dismissed Democratic responses as largely ineffective, claiming there is little room left for additional Democratic gerrymandering. He urged that responding robustly is the only way for Republicans to “rebalance the scales” after what he called a “very unfair system” created by previous Democratic actions.
“[A]ll we’re doing, frankly, is trying to make the situation a little bit more fair on a national scale,” Vance continued. “The Democrats have gerrymandered their states really aggressively. We think there are opportunities to push back against that. And that’s really all we’re doing.”
Vance explained that Republicans must fight fire with fire on redistricting, asserting that such steps are necessary for the integrity of our republic, especially given the aggressive district-drawing strategies of Democratic-controlled states.
On Fox News’ “Sunday Morning Futures,” Vance reportedly told Maria Bartiromo that “the only real way to fight back against it is for us to redistrict, in some ways, as aggressively as these hard-blue states have done.”
