Republican strategist Scott Jennings said Sunday that much of Democrats’ anger over President Donald Trump’s crackdown in Washington, D.C., was about their management of American cities being revealed.
Trump announced a federal takeover of Washington’s Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) to combat crime in the district on Aug. 11, days after Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) staffer Edward Coristine, known by the moniker “Big Balls,” was severely injured when he intervened to stop a mob from carrying out a carjacking. Jennings said Trump was showing Americans that big cities did not need to be “overrun” with criminals or illegal immigrants.
WATCH:
“I think Democrats here are squealing because a Republican president is showing up in blue cities, places that have been run for decades by Democrats that are overrun with violent crime and overrun with illegal immigration and they’ve done nothing about it,” Jennings told “CNN Newsroom” host Jessica Dean. “And even worse, they have encouraged it. It was soft on crime local policies and so the real issue here is political. It’s just that Democrats are being exposed as being crappy at running big cities.”
Trump criticized Democratic Gov. Wes Moore of Maryland over crime in Baltimore in a Sunday post on Truth Social, in which he said that he would send the National Guard if Moore “needs help” to address the “out of control, crime ridden” city. Trump made a similar comment about Democratic Mayor Brandon Johnson of Chicago in a Monday post on Truth Social.
Since Trump launched the crackdown in the nation’s capital, 1,007 arrests have been made and 111 guns have been seized, according to a Monday post on X by Attorney General Pam Bondi.
“And Donald Trump is showing up to show the people there, hey, it doesn’t have to be this way,” Jennings said. “And oh, by the way, if we bring down the rates of violence and the rates of illegal immigration, that’ll be a great thing to go along with it.”
