The immigration case that has become a flashpoint in Trump’s crackdown has taken another turn. Kilmar Abrego Garcia — born in El Salvador and living in Maryland with his wife and child — turned himself in to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) in Baltimore on Monday morning.
According to WTTG in Washington, D.C., Abrego Garcia arrived to the local ICE office around 6:45 a.m. ET.
The news comes after a federal judge ordered Abrego Garcia’s release from jail on Friday. As a condition of his release, the judge required him to check in with ICE agents on Monday morning.
It’s unclear what the intention behind the check-in is, but Abrego Garcia’s attorney suspected he would be taken into custody.
“I expect that ICE will take him into detention because, well, pretty much that’s what they do. They have said they’re going to try to deport him,” attorney Simon Sandoval-Moshenberg said.
Immigration officials had previously informed Abrego Garcia of their intention to deport him to Uganda.
Protests supporting Abrego Garcia
Ahead of Abrego Garcia’s Monday deadline to report to ICE, immigrant activists, faith leaders, elected officials and other supporters held a prayer vigil and rally.
Supporters showed up at the rally with signs that Abrego Garcia should remain in Baltimore with his family and others that read “Free Kilmar” and “Keep Kilmar here.”
Wrongfully deported
In March, the U.S. wrongfully deported Abrego Garcia to El Salvador because of a paperwork error. Instead of releasing him, the government fought to keep him detained, accusing him of ties to MS-13. Abrego Garcia and his supporters strongly denied these charges.
In June, Abergo Garcia was returned to the U.S. following a court order. He was held in custody in Tennessee until his release on Friday.
