From a big-picture perspective, Canada’s biggest problem is ever-growing government.
This is mostly due to the feckless policies of the former Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau.
During his time in office, Canada became a member of the Anti-Convergence Club, which is not a good outcome.
Though the current Prime Minister, Mark Carney, does not seem any better (and his crummy track record at the Bank of England hardly inspires confidence).
For purposes of today’s column, though, let’s set aside the grim topic of Canada’s economic decline and instead focus on a controversy that could be categorized as moral decline.
As reported by Sarah MacMillan and Sarah Petz of CBC, the police are charging a homeowner for beating up a criminal who broke into his home.
A man is facing assault charges for allegedly injuring an intruder at his home in Lindsay, Ont., according to local police. The Kawartha Lakes Police Service says it responded to a call on Kent Street at about 3:20 a.m. on Monday. According to police, the resident had woken up to find an intruder inside his apartment. The two had an “altercation” and the intruder suffered life-threatening injuries, police say, and was later airlifted to a Toronto hospital. Police say the resident is facing charges for aggravated assault and assault with a weapon. The alleged intruder, 41, is also facing charges, including breaking and entering and possession of a weapon for dangerous purposes. Police say the man was also already wanted for unrelated offences.
Sounds like the burglar is a career criminal. More important, sounds like he got exactly what he deserved.
In the United States (at least in the rational parts), the cops would be congratulating the homeowner. In Canada, he’s being harassed.
You probably won’t be surprised to learn that this isn’t the first time that something moronic has happened in Canada.
- Spending taxpayer money to cull deer when hunters said they would do it for free.
- Handcuffing a woman for not holding an escalator handrail.
- Stripping a dental hygienist of his license for having sex with his wife.
- Levying a $465 fine on a motorist with a slight tear in his driver’s license.
- Grudgingly allowing two girls to operate a lemonade stand.
- Awarding extra money to a healthcare worker because alcoholism is a disability.
- Ruling that it is illegal for two kids to sell worms without a license.
- Fining a mother for giving her kids non-state-approved lunches.
- Suspending a student for rescuing a classmate from a bully.
- Telling an Italian restaurant that Italian words are against the law.
P.S. While most of Canada’s wounds are self-inflicted, the country is also being hurt by Trump’s protectionism (which is, of course, also hurting the United States).
