A late-night home invasion attempt in Houston ended in deadly gunfire after two men allegedly impersonating police officers were fatally shot by the homeowners, authorities said.
According to the Houston Police Department, the incident happened around 11 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 22, when two masked men wearing bulletproof vests, ski masks, and badges showed up at a residence claiming they were officers there to serve a warrant.
HPD Lieutenant Khan said the homeowners became immediately suspicious when they noticed several red flags: there were no marked police cars outside, no flashing lights, and the men refused to show proper identification.
As tensions escalated, investigators say the suspects opened fire through the front door, striking the house. The resident returned fire, hitting both suspects. Despite officers performing CPR when they arrived, both men were pronounced dead at the scene.
“Right now, we don’t have ages on the suspects,” Khan said during a press briefing. “They look to be younger, maybe at the most in their 30s.”
Thankfully, none of the homeowners were injured, and a child inside the house was also unharmed, according to ABC 13.
Khan said the family’s Ring doorbell camera played a crucial role in exposing the ruse. “They immediately became suspicious because it was just two masked people claiming to be police, no marked cars, no lights,” she explained. “Thankfully, no one else was hurt.”
Detectives spent hours canvassing the neighborhood overnight and interviewing witnesses as the investigation continues.
