An Idaho father has been arrested and charged with murder after allegedly confessing to killing his 18-year-old daughter — and then wrapping her body in a Pride flag to “honor” her.
According to the Caldwell Police Department, officers discovered the body of Hope “Onyx” Cornish on Tuesday, Aug. 19, while responding to reports of an armed man inside a Caldwell home. Police identified the suspect as 51-year-old Delbert Cornish, who was later arrested that evening in Mountain Home, Idaho.
A probable cause affidavit obtained by Idaho News 6 and reviewed by PEOPLE reveals disturbing details. Delbert allegedly told investigators he shot Onyx in the head and then watched for 20 minutes as she struggled to breathe before dying. He claimed he draped her body in a Pride flag afterward, saying it was meaningful to her and that he wanted to “honor” her.
The affidavit also alleges Delbert had been planning to kill himself and all three of his children for nearly a year but had delayed his plan after his eldest child was sent back to prison for a parole violation. He reportedly told police he was “tired” of his children being bullied and “belittled” by his brother, with whom the family lived, alleging his brother often called the children names like “loser” and “pedophile.”
Onyx’s mother, Crystal Thompson, told News 19 that her daughter was vibrant and loving. “She was a fiery one. She was just very stylish, and she was kind and loving,” Thompson said, adding that she never imagined her children weren’t physically safe around Delbert.
Delbert Cornish has been charged with murder and aggravated assault. He remains in custody, and court records do not yet indicate a plea.
