The Democratic Party is facing steep voter registration losses nationwide, with new data showing Republicans gaining ground in every state that tracks partisan registration. Breitbart News reports on a New York Timesanalysis of voter registration records, which was compiled by nonpartisan data firm L2, found that more new voters identified as Republicans than Democrats in 2024 — the first time that has happened since 2018.
The shift has been fueled by President Donald Trump’s gains among younger voters, Latinos, and men. The report describes the situation as dire for Democrats, noting that the party’s traditional methods of reversing registration declines no longer appear effective. Party officials and strategists, the Times noted, are increasingly unsure how to recover.
“Of the 30 states that track voter registration by political party, Democrats lost ground to Republicans in every single one between the 2020 and 2024 elections — and often by a lot,” the report stated. “That four-year swing toward the Republicans adds up to 4.5 million voters, a deep political hole that could take years for Democrats to climb out from.”
The numbers illustrate a nationwide trend, spanning red, blue, and swing states alike:
“All told, Democrats lost about 2.1 million registered voters between the 2020 and 2024 elections in the 30 states, along with Washington, D.C., that allow people to register with a political party,” the report added. “(In the remaining 20 states, voters do not register with a political party.) Republicans gained 2.4 million.”
Because several large states register voters differently — California tracks party registration while Texas does not — the nationwide numbers do not tell the full story. But in the states with partisan registration, Democrats’ advantage fell sharply: from an 11-point lead in 2020 to just over six points by 2024.
Michael Pruser, director of data science for Decision Desk HQ, told the Times, “I don’t want to say, ‘The death cycle of the Democratic Party,’ but there seems to be no end to this. There is no silver lining or cavalry coming across the hill. This is month after month, year after year.”
The report also found that by 2024, Republicans’ share of newly registered voters nationwide had surpassed Democrats’, climbing nine points since 2018 while Democrats’ share dropped by nearly eight percent. The same trend appeared in key battleground states such as North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Arizona, and Nevada.
According to the Times, Democrats face a particularly difficult challenge because Trump’s Republican coalition is cutting into demographics that were once seen as reliable Democratic constituencies. For years, nonprofits worked to register younger, Black, and Latino voters under the assumption they would lean Democratic. But as the Times noted, “Mr. Trump upended that calculation with the inroads he made with working-class nonwhite voters.”
