President Donald Trump took to the streets of Washington, D.C., Thursday evening in a show of force with law enforcement and National Guard members, signaling a potential full federal takeover of the city.
Trump addressed the assembled officers and Guard personnel, pointing to his administration’s federal operation as proof that crime is falling in the capital.
“We’ve had some incredible results and results have come out and it’s like a different place. It’s like a different city,” Trump said. “The numbers are down like we wouldn’t believe, but we believe it.”
The president also posted on Truth Social, threatening D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser (D) and hinting at a complete federal takeover if crime figures continue to be misrepresented.
“Washington, D.C. is SAFE AGAIN! The crowds are coming back, the spirit is high, and our D.C. National Guard and Police are doing a fantastic job. They are out in force, and are NOT PLAYING GAMES!!! As bad as it sounds to say, there were no murders this week for the first time in memory. Mayor Muriel Bowser must immediately stop giving false and highly inaccurate crime figures, or bad things will happen, including a complete and total Federal takeover of the City! Washington D.C. will soon be great again!!!” he wrote.
The announcement comes after the Metropolitan Police Department confirmed the city has gone more than a week without a homicide, per the Conservative Brief.
This streak coincides with Trump’s federal operation, which began on August 11 with 800 National Guard troops deployed to assist local law enforcement.
Additional troops from Ohio, West Virginia, South Carolina, Louisiana, Mississippi, and Tennessee have since joined the initiative.
Trump said his goal is not only to reduce crime but also to physically rebuild and improve the city.
“We’re going back to Congress for some money, and we’re going to redo a lot of the pavement, a lot of the medians, a lot of the graffiti is all coming off real fast, it’s going to come down real fast,” he said. “We’re going to be rebuilding all of your parks, and it’s going to happen fast. It’s going to go up like a miracle. You do the job of safety and I’ll get this place fixed up physically. We’re going to be so proud of it at the end of six months, but let’s say at the end of a year, this place will be maxed out in terms of beauty,” he said.
Vice President J.D. Vance visited the city a day earlier to meet with Guard troops stationed at Union Station.
“We are seeing really substantial effects because these guys are busting their a–,” Vance said. He described conditions at Union Station, where vagrants, drug addicts, and the chronically homeless had long harassed and attacked families, as a problem Trump’s operation is now addressing.
Trump’s hands-on approach underscores his administration’s aggressive stance on urban crime and public safety. With the combination of federal oversight, law enforcement, and National Guard support, Trump appears determined to show that his operation is making a tangible difference on the streets of the nation’s capital.
Supporters praised the results, while critics warn that the federal involvement in D.C. sets a controversial precedent. The coming weeks will reveal whether Trump’s federal operation is a temporary boost to public safety or the start of a long-term citywide overhaul.
