Hold onto your hats, folks — President Donald Trump just notched a major win against what he calls a blatant political attack in New York.
In a stunning turn of events, a New York appeals court unanimously tossed out a staggering $364 million penalty against Trump in a civil fraud case brought by state AG Letitia James, ruling that it violated the Eighth Amendment as cruel and unusual punishment, as Breitbart reports.
The total sum, including interest and penalties, ballooned to over $550 million before the court stepped in with a 5-0 vote to strike it down on Wednesday.
Unanimous ruling on penalty
While the court upheld Judge Arthur Engoron’s earlier finding that Trump inflated his net worth, as reported by the Associated Press, it deemed the financial punishment wildly excessive.
Trump didn’t waste a second, taking to Truth Social on Thursday with two fiery posts blasting the original decision as a “Political Witch Hunt” designed to cripple his business dealings.
“TOTAL VICTORY in the FAKE…Case!” Trump declared, praising the court’s courage to reverse what he described as a decision “hurting Business all throughout New York State.” Well, it seems the Empire State just got a reality check on overreach.
Trump slams process, opponents
Trump didn’t hold back on Judge Engoron, calling him “one of the most overturned in History,” while claiming not a single ruling went his way during a trial where he was denied a jury.
He also pointed out the financial toll, noting that bonding the massive penalty cost him “Millions of Dollars a month”—a burden he argued was unprecedented and unjust.
“It should have never been allowed to happen,” Trump fumed, suggesting the case was nothing more than election interference by city and state officials. If that’s not a wake-up call about weaponized lawfare, what is?
Other battles loom large
But this isn’t the end of Trump’s courtroom saga — he’s still entangled in other appeals, including a business records case under Judge Juan Merchan, where a conviction was upheld without a penalty.
Then there’s the case with E. Jean Carroll, overseen by Judge Lewis Kaplan, where a jury awarded her $83.3 million before Trump appealed the verdict.
Trump didn’t mince words about these judges, accusing Merchan of bias due to alleged conflicts and Kaplan of being “mean and nasty” while blocking key evidence. Sounds like the legal deck might be stacked, but Trump’s not folding.
A pattern of political attacks?
“These were all Political Trials,” Trump charged, alleging coordination with opposing political forces to derail his candidacy at every turn. It’s hard not to wonder if justice is blind or just wearing partisan goggles.
Despite the onslaught, Trump expressed pride in enduring these challenges, thanking his son Eric and his legal team for fighting against “heavy odds” to secure this latest triumph.
“This is a Great Day for New York City and State!” Trump concluded, framing the ruling as a win not just for him, but for fair business practices across the region. Maybe, just maybe, common sense can still prevail in the face of progressive overreach.
