Brazil’s political pot boiled over once again this week as the Federal Police dropped a fourth indictment on former President Jair Bolsonaro, pulling his son Eduardo into the storm.
Breitbart reported that both Bolsonaros now face charges linked to alleged attempts to derail Brazil’s democratic institutions ahead of Jair Bolsonaro’s impending trial over a suspected coup plot.
On Thursday, Brazil’s Federal Police formally accused the former president and Congressman Eduardo Bolsonaro of orchestrating schemes to sabotage the legal process and put pressure on the Supreme Federal Tribunal with help from foreign powers.
New Indictment Casts New Shadows
The accusations include “coercion in the process” and undermining Brazil’s democratic structure, charges stemming from an investigation authorized by Supreme Justice Alexandre de Moraes earlier this year.
According to investigators, Eduardo Bolsonaro allegedly lobbied the Trump administration to punish key figures in the judiciary, a move prosecutors say was part of a broader strategy to intimidate institutions perceived as adversarial.
Text messages obtained during the probe reportedly reveal that Eduardo encouraged his father to issue a friendly thank-you to former President Trump, aligning the gesture with their ongoing efforts to preserve international backing.
Federally filed documents also suggest Eduardo attempted what can only be described as legislative strong-arming—pressuring Brazilian lawmakers to pass sweeping amnesty laws while floating extreme proposals like removing Supreme Court justices through legal and political pressure.
Authorities further allege that Eduardo used knowledge of U.S. actions—specifically sanctions levied against de Moraes—to manipulate narratives and weaponize international diplomacy against domestic legal hurdles.
Evidence of this coordination reportedly includes communication explicitly plotting continued foreign support, with police capturing an apparent asylum draft sitting idly on Jair Bolsonaro’s mobile phone.
The 33-page asylum plea, discovered by authorities, was dated just two days after Operação Tempus Veritatis in February 2024—a federal action in which Bolsonaro’s passport was seized.
According to Brazilian officials, this draft supports suspicions that Bolsonaro may have intended to flee to Argentina, though an Argentine source told Reuters that President Javier Milei’s office never received any formal request.
Justice de Moraes has since pressed Bolsonaro’s legal team for an explanation of the draft and has forwarded the indictment to the Prosecutor General for possible action.
Eduardo Bolsonaro Speaks Out
Eduardo Bolsonaro, defiant and unshaken, denied having done anything that rose to the level of criminal interference, instead framing his actions as part of a push to expand individual liberty and pass long-overdue amnesty legislation.
“If my ‘crime’ is fighting against the Brazilian dictatorship,” he declared, “I hereby declare myself guilty in advance.” Well, that’s one way to embrace irony—call yourself guilty and hope the rest just folds under the weight of political theater.
The congressman also slammed the judicial use of personal text messages between him and his father, calling the tactic “lamentable and shameful”—though some might counter that conspiring through encrypted chats with foreign powers tends to raise a few red flags.
All this comes just weeks after the United States placed human rights sanctions on Justice Alexandre de Moraes, citing censorship and persecution of Brazil’s conservative opposition—namely the Bolsonaros and their allies.
In response, Justice Flávio Dino ruled that Brazilian institutions are not to comply with foreign executive orders, effectively blocking U.S. penalties within Brazil’s jurisdiction.
Justice de Moraes, in a moment of unexpected optimism, told Reuters he is “confident” former President Trump will walk back the sanctions, even acknowledging the lack of support for them across the U.S. government.
The trial, slated for September, is expected to draw national and international attention. All defendants, including Bolsonaro, have submitted statements, and the political temperature is rising fast.
