Democrat New York City Mayor Eric Adams and several of his associates have long faced allegations of political corruption, some of which have resulted in investigations and criminal indictments.
On Thursday, new charges of bribery were announced against Ingrid Lewis-Martin, a former chief advisor to Adams, who resigned last year following a separate criminal indictment, also for alleged bribery and pay-to-play schemes, Fox News reported.
The unveiling of the indictment against Lewis-Martin came just one day after another of the mayor’s top aides, Winnie Greco, who has since been suspended, was accused of attempting to slip money hidden inside a bag of chips to a local reporter.
Former advisor, staffer, charged with bribery, conspiracy
In a Thursday press release, Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg announced that multiple counts of conspiracy and bribery had been filed against Lewis-Martin and several others, including her son, Glenn Martin II, another Adams staffer, Jesse Hamilton, as well as local business owners and donors associated with the mayor’s office.
Between March 2022 and November 2024, Lewis-Martin is alleged to have received more than $75,000 in bribes, including $50,000 in cash deposited in her son’s account, which came from steering city contracts for migrant shelters to a preferred property owner who earned more than $1 million from the contract.
Other alleged schemes involved cancelling a street redesign at the request of a business owner in exchange for cash, an appearance on a TV show, and catering at the mayor’s mansion, as well as expediting approvals for development projects in exchange for more event catering and home renovations.
“We allege that Ingrid Lewis-Martin engaged in classic bribery conspiracies that had a deep and wide-ranging impact on City government,” D.A. Bragg said. “As alleged, Lewis-Martin consistently overrode the expertise of public servants so she could line her own pockets.”
“While she allegedly received more than $75,000 in bribes and an appearance on a TV show, every other New Yorker lost out,” the prosecutor added. “Hardworking City employees were undermined, businesses and developers who followed the law were pushed aside, and the public was victimized by corruption at the highest levels of government.”
Cash allegedly hidden in bag of chips
Meanwhile, just one day before those corruption charges were announced against Lewis-Martin, local media outlet The City reported that another of Mayor Adams’ longtime top advisors, Winnie Greco, allegedly attempted to give cash hidden inside a bag of chips to one of its reporters.
Greco reportedly gave the bag of chips to The City journalist Katie Honan, who discovered inside a small red envelope containing an unknown quantity of cash, which was left unopened and was instead turned over to federal law enforcement.
The story immediately went viral and was quickly seized upon by the embattled mayor’s re-election rivals as further evidence of the alleged rampant corruption within the Adams administration.
Adams spokesperson responds
Mayor Adams, readers may recall, was criminally indicted on corruption charges under the prior Biden administration — notably only after he spoke out against the former president’s lax immigration enforcement policies — only to have those charges dropped earlier this year by the Trump administration.
A spokesman for Adams, Todd Shapiro, told Fox News that his boss “has not been accused of any wrongdoing,” and said of the new indictments against the former top advisor, “While Ingrid Lewis-Martin no longer works for this administration, she has been a friend and colleague of the mayor for over 40 years, and he knows her as a devoted public servant; she has declared her innocence, and his prayers are with her and her family.”
“Mayor Adams also recognizes that Jesse Hamilton has pleaded not guilty, and like anyone accused, he is entitled to the presumption of innocence,” the spokesman added of the other indicted staffer. “His commitment to New Yorkers is unwavering. No distraction will ever take his eyes off the ball or his dedication to this great city we all call home.”
