Syrian rapist sentenced to prison and deportation for attacking a 15-year-old now remains in Sweden after claiming conversion to Christianity—and is even running in local church elections.
A 29-year-old Syrian man, originally sentenced to prison and deportation for raping a 15-year-old girl, has been allowed to remain in Sweden after claiming to have converted to Christianity. He now seeks election to a Swedish church council.
The Crime
In July 2017, a 15-year-old girl was attacked and raped inside a tent at the Emmaboda Festival. The perpetrator, an Arab man working at the festival, entered without her consent, threatened her with a knife, and carried out the assault. That autumn, police arrested Noraldin Alhamamy, a Syrian father of two who had arrived in Sweden in 2015 during the Merkel-era migration wave, accompanied by his underage wife.
In 2018, Alhamamy was convicted of aggravated rape and sentenced to 2 years and 8 months in prison, along with ten years of deportation. The Göta Court of Appeal upheld the verdict, and the Supreme Court refused to hear his case, making the sentence final. Despite this, the deportation was never carried out.
A New Identity and Residence Permit
After serving his sentence, Alhamamy changed his name to Emil Jordensson and filed a new asylum application. His first attempt failed, but in December 2020, the Stockholm Migration Court granted him a temporary residence and work permit. The court ruled that deporting him would expose him to compulsory military service in Syria, citing a European Court of Justice decision that deserters cannot be forced to return since they may be compelled to fight for groups such as ISIS.
Claiming Christianity
In December 2021, Jordensson applied for an extension. The Migration Board rejected it, but he appealed—this time claiming that he and his family had converted to Christianity and been baptized into the Church of Sweden.
In February 2022, the Migration Court agreed to a new asylum review, ruling that his claimed Christian faith had never been considered as a basis for protection. The court noted that Muslim converts in Syria face severe persecution, including the death penalty.
Still in Sweden — and Running for Office
As a result, Jordensson remains in Sweden despite a final deportation order. Now 29 years old, he is running in the upcoming Church of Sweden elections in Ljungby’s Maria parish, Småland, hoping to secure a seat on the parish council.
He continues to deny the rape conviction, insisting the sex was consensual, and blames his past crimes, including theft and sexual assault, on a troubled upbringing. He has admitted fearing that his criminal history may damage his chances in the parish election.
