President Donald Trump’s second administration has achieved a central campaign promise and definitively secured the border, according to Secretary of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Kristi Noem.
In an Aug. 21 op-ed at USA Today, Noem compared Trump to baseball legend Babe Ruth, who was known for calling where his out-of-the-park balls would fly ahead of time, then delivering home runs to riotous applause.
“President Donald Trump, like Ruth, called his shot in the 2024 presidential campaign, saying that ‘you don’t need eight years, you need six months’ to turn our nation around,” Noem wrote. “Seven months into his second term, it’s clear that the president has done what he said he’d do by reestablishing law and order at our southern border and by removing violent illegal immigrants from our nation.”
Noem touted her own agency’s role in cracking down on illegal immigration via law enforcement, asserting that the DHS puts “excellence at the heart of everything we do.”
“In fact, 1.6 million illegal immigrants have left the United States under President Trump’s leadership,” she reported.
More than 3,000 members of Tren de Aragua and 600 people known or suspected to be terrorists have been arrested, she added.
Noem linked the administration’s arrests and deportations with a general improvement in Americans’ quality of life.
“As a result of Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s actions, illegal immigrants are exiting the labor force because they are either being deported or voluntarily departing,” she continued. “As they go, more Americans are finding steady and gainful employment. In fact, the American-born workforce has seen an increase of 2.5 million between January and July of this year.”
As CatholicVote reported earlier this month, the Bureau of Labor Statistics’ Aug. 1 jobs report showed much lower gains than expected, but the fact that job gains were made entirely among native-born Americans was widely celebrated as a victory among supporters of Trump’s border security agenda.
As Trump Labor Secretary Lori Chavez-DeRemer stated at the time, “While we could have seen better jobs numbers, right now we’re seeing American workers are being put first — native-born workers account for all of the job growth and that’s key.”
