In the early days of President Donald Trump’s second term, political voices largely dismissed the idea that his 2024 voters regretted casting their ballots for him. While anecdotes of dissatisfaction existed, data suggested the phenomenon was overstated. Now, more than six months into his second term, new polling indicates that discontent may be on the rise.
The poll

A University of Massachusetts Amherst survey offers one of the clearest snapshots yet. The poll found that only 69% of Trump’s 2024 voters said they were “very confident that I made the right choice.” In comparison, 78% of Vice President Kamala Harris’s voters expressed the same confidence in their decision. The number for Trump supporters also marks a decline from April, when 74% said they were very confident in their vote. The findings do not mean that nearly a third of Trump voters have abandoned him outright. A significant share — 19% — reported they remain “confident” in their choice but have “some concerns.” However, about 10% of Trump voters admitted to experiencing regret, mixed feelings or wishing they had not voted at all.
Trump’s voters

Overall, 14% of Trump’s voters said that if given the chance to recast their 2024 ballots, they would make a different choice. That group splits between those who would vote for Harris (6%), choose a third-party candidate (5%) or abstain from voting entirely (3%). By contrast, only 8% of Harris voters indicated they would change their decision. While it is just one poll, the numbers fit into a broader pattern. Gallup tracking shows Trump’s approval ratings have continued to decline, reaching historically low levels for both a first and second presidential term. Several recent decisions by the Trump administration appear to have aggravated portions of his base.
MAGA figures

Among the contributing factors are military strikes on Iran, which some prominent MAGA figures initially opposed, and Trump’s increasing support for arming Ukraine. Surveys indicate that Republicans disapprove of sending weapons to Ukraine by nearly a two-to-one margin. The president also signed a sweeping agenda bill that included Medicaid cuts, which drew tepid support even within his party. CNN polling found only 30% of Republicans strongly supported the measure. Economic policy has also been a source of tension. Some Republicans have criticized Trump’s tariff policies, while others argue he has not done enough to address inflation.
Trump and Epstein

Perhaps the most damaging controversy, however, involves the administration’s handling of the Epstein files. According to the UMass Amherst poll, just 38% of Trump voters believe the administration has managed the situation well, while 33% think it is concealing information. That means one in three Trump voters suspect some form of cover-up — a sentiment reflected in other surveys suggesting the scandal is Trump’s most serious vulnerability with his own base.
