A liberal woman in Virginia sparked widespread attention after her protest sign went viral during an Arlington County School Board meeting, drawing outrage and debate over race and gender policies.
The protest occurred while Virginia Lieutenant Gov. Winsome Earle-Sears, the Republican candidate for governor, addressed issues of school policy and student safety.
The protest included multiple signs, but one in particular drew sharp scrutiny.
It read: “Hey Winsome, If Trans Can’t Share Your Bathroom, Then Blacks Can’t Share My Water Fountain.”
Observers noted the message appeared to target Earle-Sears personally; she is black, an immigrant and a former Marine.
Matthew Hurtt, chairman of the Arlington County Republican Committee, told Red State the sign was “absolutely disgusting,” adding that such behavior has unfortunately become common among some activists in the area.
Earle-Sears addressed the incident directly.
“I’m disgusted, but not surprised,” she wrote on X. “This is the ‘tolerant’ left Abigail Spanberger defends.”
“I’m the sitting Lieutenant Governor, second in command in the former Capitol of the Confederate states. I’m an immigrant, a Marine, and above all, a human being. There is no place for this disgusting hatred in our Commonwealth. Anyone who doesn’t condemn this sign is complicit in approving it.”
Social media users quickly reacted to the viral sign.
Utah Sen. Mike Lee (R) commented, “The more things change, the more the Party of Jim Crow remains the same.”
Rev. Dr. Charles Harrison added, “I was born in 1960, during the Jim Crow era and the Civil Rights Movement, a time when Black individuals could not drink from water fountains that were labeled ‘whites only.’ You should feel ashamed of yourself, and your sign is racist and despicable. You don’t get a pass because you are a white liberal.”
Other X users weighed in with pointed remarks.
“Liberals have been and always were the real racist Nazis,” one user wrote.
“Putting ‘Blacks can’t share my water fountain’ on a sign is a choice. Democrats will be Democrats,” another stated.
One user added, “When progressives tell you who they are, believe them. This is pure evil.”
Despite the disruption, Earle-Sears continued her remarks, focusing on school policies she believes put students at risk.
She criticized the Arlington County School Board for allowing policies that could permit a sex offender access to a girls’ high school locker room, highlighting concerns over student safety and parental rights.
She stressed that schools should prioritize protecting all children, regardless of background or identity.
Recent polling indicates a tightening race between Earle-Sears and her Democratic opponent, Rep. Abigail Spanberger (D-VA).
A Roanoke College survey reported Spanberger’s lead shrinking from 17 points to seven points over the summer.
Analysts suggest that increased attention to education and safety issues could energize Republican voters, echoing trends from Gov. Glenn Youngkin’s 2021 gubernatorial campaign, when engaged parents mobilized around similar concerns.
The debate over gender identity policies in Virginia schools has intensified statewide, as Resist the Mainstream has previously highlighted.
In Loudoun County, two male students were recently suspended after expressing discomfort about a female student, reportedly identifying as male, entering the boys’ locker room and recording video footage.
As part of disciplinary measures, the students met with administrators, served 10-day suspensions and adhered to a no-contact order.
Earle-Sears has consistently positioned herself as an advocate for student safety and parental rights, emphasizing that school policies should protect all children.
She has publicly called on lawmakers and political opponents to condemn acts of racial hostility and support policies that prioritize student well-being.
Her campaign continues to focus on education, public safety, and opposition to policies she views as extreme, while navigating racially charged incidents and public protests.
