A horrifying case out of Birmingham, England, has ended with a guilty verdict after a brutal attack that left a woman with life-changing injuries.
On Friday, Aug. 22, West Midlands Police confirmed that 49-year-old Raju Mollah was found guilty of the attempted murder of his wife, Mosammed Mumtaz, after a violent assault earlier this year.
According to police, the attack happened on Jan. 12 when Mollah poured hot oil over his wife’s face before repeatedly punching, kicking, and hitting her with heated hot plate racks. The assault began after Mollah allegedly asked Mumtaz to make him an omelette, and when she refused, he launched into a frenzied attack.
Mumtaz, who suffered severe burns to her head and body, told emergency responders on the way to the hospital, “My husband tried to kill me. He’s a bad man, he threw oil over me.” She also lost several teeth during the assault and remains scarred from the injuries.
In court, prosecutors revealed that the couple had been married for 23 years and had been arguing over selling a home reportedly owned by Mumtaz. While Mollah admitted to being involved in the altercation, he denied trying to kill her, claiming instead that she “knocked the oil onto herself” during a struggle and even alleged she threatened him with a knife.
Prosecutors rejected his defense, describing the attack as deliberate and sustained. “This was a vicious attack, where he clearly tried to kill his wife,” said Rebecca Pugh and George Kawalek of the West Midlands Police. “The victim has been very brave, having sustained significant and life-changing injuries, and thankfully Mollah will be spending a good amount of time behind bars.”
Mollah will remain in custody until his sentencing, which is scheduled for November.
