Federal agents with the FBI conducted a raid on the Bethesda, Maryland, residence of former National Security Advisor John Bolton early Friday morning as part of a national security investigation into potential classified materials.
The FBI reportedly arrived at Bolton’s home around 7 a.m., with additional personnel later observed at his Washington, D.C., office removing boxes.
Bolton, who served as President Donald Trump’s national security adviser from 2018 to 2019, was present at the office but is not in custody or under arrest, Fox News reports.
The investigation, ordered by FBI Director Kash Patel, focuses on classified information authorities believe Bolton may still possess.
Patel posted on X shortly after the raid began, stating, “NO ONE is above the law…@FBI agents on mission.”
FBI Deputy Director Dan Bongino added, “Public corruption will not be tolerated,” while Attorney General Pam Bondi commented, “America’s safety isn’t negotiable. Justice will be pursued. Always.”
A senior U.S. official said the probe was initially launched several years ago but was paused under the Biden administration for political reasons.
Bolton had previously faced scrutiny for including classified material in his 2020 memoir, “The Room Where It Happened,” which Trump attempted to block.
Federal judges ultimately allowed the book’s publication.
Justice Department lawyers argued it contained sensitive information about U.S. intelligence sources, foreign policy deliberations and discussions with foreign leaders.
Bolton’s attorney has stated that a senior National Security Council official conducted a four-month prepublication review of the book, requiring revisions and ultimately concluding it contained no classified material.
The memoir detailed controversial claims about the Trump administration, including allegations that Trump sought assistance from Chinese President Xi Jinping to aid his reelection efforts.
The book also covered other high-profile foreign policy decisions, including Trump’s approach to North Korea, Iran and Russia, providing an insider perspective on the administration’s diplomatic strategies and internal deliberations.
Since leaving the administration, Bolton and Trump have frequently criticized each other publicly.
Bolton has regularly appeared on cable news to analyze foreign policy and national security issues, although he supported Trump’s military strike on Iran’s nuclear facilities, calling it “a decisive action” and “the right thing to do,”
Bolton’s X account posted at 7:32 a.m., around the time of the raid, commenting on the Russia-Ukraine conflict.
“Russia has not changed its goal: drag Ukraine into a new Russian Empire…Meanwhile, meetings will continue because Trump wants a Nobel Peace Prize, but I don’t see these talks making any progress,” he wrote.
It remains unclear if the post was scheduled or composed during the raid, Trending Politics notes.
Previously, Bolton served as U.S. ambassador to the United Nations from 2005 to 2006 under former President George W. Bush.
His tenure in the Trump administration was marked by policy disagreements that ultimately led to his dismissal in 2019.
Officials emphasized that the investigation remains ongoing, and no charges have been filed.
Patel has pledged to pursue federal accountability and address alleged corruption, underscoring a focus on national security enforcement within the Trump administration.
