TAMPA, FL – A man attempting to deliver drugs using a drone found himself in legal trouble when the device crashed in the wrong backyard, according to the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office.
In the early hours of Tuesday, residents on Hannah Michaela Lane in Lutz were startled by a loud noise. Upon investigating, a homeowner discovered a drone had landed in their yard. Attached to it was a brown cloth bag containing three bags of fentanyl powder and one bag of methamphetamine.
The unexpected delivery prompted the residents to immediately contact authorities. Before deputies could arrive, the homeowners observed a man with a flashlight searching the yard. Security footage identified this individual as the drone operator, later identified as Jason Brooks.
Brooks reportedly knocked on the door three times, attempting to retrieve the errant package. When deputies arrived, they found him waiting outside the house. Inside the bag, each package of drugs was labeled with customer names, according to Sheriff Chad Chronister.
Chronister noted that Brooks’ attempt to avoid detection using the drone ultimately led to his capture. Deputies are now examining the drone’s data to uncover any additional delivery attempts.
Brooks appeared in court virtually that afternoon, facing several charges, including possession with intent to sell. He was granted bond on these charges but remains held without bond due to an outstanding warrant from Pasco County for failure to appear.
Authorities are keen to analyze the drone data, which may reveal further details about Brooks’ operations and other potential delivery locations.
