Sen. Adam Schiff is getting his legal defense ready as President Donald Trump’s Department of Justice is looking into alleged mortgage fraud. It comes after a criminal referral from the Federal Housing Finance Agency.
Schiff has denied any wrongdoing, and says the allegations are politically motivated. He’s also said that he’s being targeted for his role in leading Trump’s first impeachment.
Trump has accused Schiff of misrepresenting his primary residence to secure more favorable mortgage terms.
No criminal charges have been filed.
Schiff is not the only Democrat being investigated. In recent weeks, the Trump administration has levied mortgage fraud allegations against two other Democratic officials: Federal Reserve governor Lisa Cook and New York Attorney General Letitia James.
Media Miss by the right: Obama backs Newsom’s redistricting plan as answer to Texas GOP map push
Former President Barack Obama is backing California Gov. Gavin Newsom’s plan to counter Texas’ efforts to gain Republicans five more seats in the U.S. House of Representatives.
At a fundraising event on Tuesday, Aug. 10, Obama called the plan a “responsible approach” because it would only move forward if Texas or another red state approves a redistricting map that leans in the GOP’s favor. Newsom’s proposal would increase the number of Democratic house seats in California by five to counter the five Republican seats Texas plans to add. The Texas’ House passed its bill on Wednesday, but it must now be approved by the state Senate.
