Two weeks ago, Britain’s tabloid Daily Mail, which has offices and a surfeit of staff across America, popped a “silly season” story about an anonymous source telling them that Stephen K. Bannon was “plotting a sensational run for president in 2028.”
These stories aren’t new, with POLITICO running a similar piece in March. It should also come as no surprise to you that plenty of people have urged Bannon to enter elected politics over the past decade, much to his repeated chagrin and scoffs.
“I don’t think like a politician,” Bannon told POLITICO earlier this year. “All I do is back President Trump and try to move the populist national agenda and the America First agenda.”
I spoke to POLITICO “on background” for their story, and we debunked the Mail’s recent report by doing something crazy: calling Steve to check/confirm. The Mail told me they contacted Bannon, but he never responded. I asked how they reached out, and they admitted to using a decade-old e-mail address that Steve no longer even uses. Modern media, eh?
But what is more interesting to me than these speculative reports into the 2028 GOP primary field is who the anonymous sources behind them are. In this case, they are real people, and I happen to know who they are.
Currently, some very nervous people around Vice President J.D. Vance are concerned about the following:
-
Who he will have to face in the primary;
-
Who their primary donors will be, and what those donors want;
-
How they will personally amass large fortunes working around the Vance campaign.
These people also happen to be the sources for these Bannon stories. Why? Because they’re trying to “flush out” competition for 2028, and they see Bannon and their most formidable potential challenger (even though Steve himself may not even be considering it).
This brings us specifically back to this latest Mail story, which in turn has led to the revelation that Elon Musk is suddenly abandoning his plans for a third party and intends to back VP Vance on the GOP ticket, instead.
That’s right. The Mail story was designed to scare Musk–an avid Bannon hater–back into the MAGA technocrat fold and stave off some populist nationalist grassroots insurgency during the next primary. Yes, Elon really does hate Steve and populist nationalism that much. He’s a tech bro. He’s an atheist. He believes in transhumanism. He loves cheap migrant labor (remember the H1B saga from earlier this year?)
I’m simplifying a lot of the background for brevity, here. But believe me, when the pieces start coming together for 2028, you’ll see precisely what I’m talking about.
And yes, Musk was tricked back into the fold because these people want (more of) his money (and power). It’s as simple as that. And it worked!
P.S. On an unrelated note, did you see this tweet from my friend Laura Loomer? I know she’s not to everyone’s taste, but there’s no denying her effectiveness. I’m grateful for the shout-out. There’s not a lot of loyalty or mutual support in Washington, D.C.
