Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem revealed Tuesday that the Trump administration will paint the entire southern border wall black to enhance its effectiveness as a deterrent against illegal immigration.
Noem made the announcement while standing before a section of the border wall in Santa Teresa, New Mexico, outlining the administration’s strategy to strengthen border security measures.
The secretary explained that the black paint serves two primary functions: heating the metal structure to make climbing more difficult and extending the wall’s operational lifespan.
“If you look at the structure that’s behind me, it’s tall, which makes it very, very difficult to climb, almost impossible. It also goes deep into the ground, which would make it very difficult, if not impossible, to dig under. And today we are also going to be painting it black,” Noem stated.
The painting initiative comes directly from President Trump’s directive, according to Noem.
“That is specifically at the request of the president, who understands that in the hot temperatures down here, when something is painted black, it gets even warmer, and it will make it even harder for people to climb,” she added.
Noem emphasized that the black paint represents part of a broader strategy to encourage legal immigration pathways.
She said, “So, we are going to be painting the entire southern border wall black to make sure that we encourage individuals to not come into our country illegally, to not break our federal laws, but that they will abide and come to our country the right way so that they can stay and have the opportunity to become United States citizens and pursue the American dream.”
The secretary credited Congress for providing necessary funding through legislation passed in July. Noem described the measure as “one big, beautiful bill” that allocated “an incredible amount of resources” enabling continued wall construction.
Construction crews are maintaining a rapid pace, completing nearly half a mile of wall per day, according to Noem’s report.
The administration’s border security investments extend beyond wall construction and painting to include advanced technology systems.
The comprehensive approach incorporates cameras, sensors and waterborne infrastructure designed to maintain long-term border security efficiency.
Noem stressed that the administration’s focus encompasses both southern and northern border protection.
“We’re doing due diligence in securing every single inch of our border,” she declared during the announcement.
Noem reinforced the administration’s philosophy on border security, stating, “Remember that a nation without borders is no nation at all.”
She expressed gratitude for presidential leadership that recognizes secure borders as essential to America’s future.
Border Patrol officials accompanied Noem during the announcement, including Interim Chief Patrol Agent for the El Paso Sector Walter Slosar.
Slosar provided operational statistics demonstrating significant changes in border crossing patterns.
Fox News reported that the El Paso Sector currently apprehends an average of 41 individuals daily, representing a dramatic decrease from the 2,300 daily apprehensions recorded under the Biden administration in 2023.
Slosar reported that the seven-day average for “gotaways” in the sector stands at nine individuals.
The majority of those apprehended consist of single adults from Mexico, Guatemala, and Ecuador.
Border Patrol operations have transformed significantly under the current administration, according to Slosar’s assessment.
While agents previously observed migrants passing through during the Biden era, illegal border crossers now flee from law enforcement.
“We’re apprehending those individuals. Our gotaways are the lowest they’ve ever been. And we’re putting we’re working with the Department of Justice … we’re putting criminal charges on those individuals applying consequences and our partners in ICE ERO [Enforcement and Removal Operations] are removing those individuals from the United States,” Slosar explained.
Agent morale in the El Paso sector has reached unprecedented levels, Slosar reported, attributing the improvement to restored mission focus.
“Morale among Border Patrol agents in the El Paso sector is better than it’s ever been because we are doing our national security job, and we are keeping this area safe,” he said.
Slosar emphasized the importance of clear governmental messaging regarding illegal border crossings.
“Words and messages matter. It is not okay to enter the country illegally, and somebody is finally saying that, that’s our leadership here in the U.S government,” he concluded.
