Vice President JD Vance, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth and Deputy Chief of Staff Stephen Miller faced a hostile reception Wednesday while distributing hamburgers to National Guard troops outside Washington, D.C.’s Union Station.
The unannounced visit took place at the Shake Shack inside the city’s historic Amtrak hub.
The officials said they came to thank Guard members stationed there since President Donald Trump ordered a federal crackdown on crime in the nation’s capital.
Their presence quickly drew protesters holding signs and chanting “Free D.C.” and “Free Palestine.”
The demonstrators shouted profanities at the officials as they attempted to serve food to uniformed service members.
One man shouted, “f*** you Pete, fing Nazi,” while another yelled, “get the f out of my city,” according to video footage from the scene.
A separate clip circulated online showed a protester mocking Vance, saying, “Oh look, it’s couch fer. You gonna f a couch buddy? Go f*** a couch, go back to Ohio little p**** boy.”
The protests came just days after Trump announced on Aug. 11 that he was deploying the National Guard to the District of Columbia and federalizing the city’s police force.
He cited the city’s high crime rate and argued that local officials had failed to keep residents safe.
National Guard troops have since been stationed at key locations around the city, including Union Station.
The building is one of the busiest train terminals in the country and is well known for its shops and food court.
It has also become a gathering point for Guard members patrolling the downtown area.
Officials reported that more than 550 arrests have been made in Washington since the deployment began.
The arrests stem from what the Trump administration has described as a crackdown on violent crime, drug activity, and public disorder.
While handing out burgers, Vance addressed the Guard directly. “We wanted to bring you guys some burgers. We appreciate everything you’ve been doing,” he said.
“You guys bust your a** all day and we give you a hamburger. Not a fair trade, but we’re grateful for everything you guys do.”
As the vice president and the other officials spoke with soldiers, the chants from protesters echoed in the background.
Miller reacted by dismissing the demonstrators, calling them “stupid white hippies.”
“So we’re going to ignore these stupid white hippies that all need to go home and take a nap because they’re all over 90 years old,” Miller told reporters gathered at the station.
His comments came as the officials attempted to hold a press Q&A during the commotion.
Vance told journalists that the deployment had already produced results.
“You can actually bring law and order to communities, you’ve just gotta have the political willpower to do it,” he said. “And I think you hear these guys outside here screaming at us.”
The vice president said he personally witnessed unsafe conditions in the past. “Of course these are a bunch of crazy protesters, but I’ll tell you, a couple of years ago when I brought my kids here, they were being screamed at by violent vagrants and it was scaring the hell out of my kids,” Vance said.
He argued that the Guard’s presence had made Union Station safer.
“One of the things that we’ve done already in Union Station in just nine days is we’ve made it a place where people can walk around safely, they can bring their kids again, they can see this beautiful monument, the architecture, they can have a meal with their friends and loved ones. Because we’ve brought some law and order back to Washington, D.C.,” Vance said, according to Daily Mail reporting.

When asked why soldiers were assigned to prominent tourist destinations rather than neighborhoods with higher violent crime rates, Vance pointed to issues at Union Station.
“Well, if you’ve ever been to Union Station in the last few years with your family, you know the crime is actually extremely high right here in Union Station,” he said.
He added, “You have vagrants, you have drug addicts, you have the chronically homeless, you have the mentally ill who harass, who threaten violence, who attack families and they’ve done it for far too long.”
Vance questioned whether most residents actually opposed the deployment.
“I’m highly skeptical that a majority of D.C. residents don’t want their city to have better public safety and more reasonable safety standards within Washington, D.C.,” he said.
“I don’t know what poll you’re talking about. Maybe the same poll that said Kamala Harris would win the popular vote by 10 points.”
A Washington Post-Schar School poll released that same day showed that 69 percent of District residents “strongly oppose” Trump federalizing the police force and calling in the National Guard.
An additional 10 percent said they somewhat opposed the move.
Only 9 percent of respondents said they strongly supported the deployment, while another 8 percent said they somewhat supported it.
Vance responded to chants of “Free D.C.” by reframing the phrase. “We hear these people outside screaming ‘Free D.C.’ Let’s free D.C. from lawlessness, let’s free Washington, D.C. from one of the highest murder rates in the entire world.”
“Let’s free Washington, D.C., so young families can walk around and feel safe and secure. That’s what we’re trying to free D.C. from,” he said.
He also pointed back to Miller’s comments about the crowd.
“And as Stephen said, it’s kind of bizarre that we have a bunch of old, primarily white people who are out there protesting the policies that keep people safe when they’ve never felt danger in their entire lives,” Vance added.
