Maybe Texas Democrats should get a participation trophy to make them feel better. Goodness knows their runaway stunt was completely and utterly performative and useless.
On Wednesday, the redistricting map at the center of this fight was up for a floor vote in the Texas House. The runaway Democrats were making a huge fuss until the very last moment, including having sleepovers on the House floor because they didn’t want a police escort to and from their homes to make sure they didn’t run off again. Oh, and trying one last stunt that has nothing to do with Texas.

Yeah, that got killed in a procedural move as it had zero to do with the redistricting map. But it does illustrate just how performatively stupid the Texas Democrats are. But don’t tell that to the Democrats from other states. They’re still attempting to make hay off the Texas vote – and getting at least one of the Texas Democrats in trouble.
Texas Democratic state Rep. Nicole Collier abruptly left a call with California Gov. Gavin Newsom and other Democratic Party members after claiming she was told she was committing a felony by participating in the meeting from a state Capitol bathroom.
Collier was speaking on a call with Democratic National Committee Chair Ken Martin, Newsom and several others while the Texas House of Representatives was simultaneously debating a redistricting bill backed by President Donald Trump.
While speaking on the call, Collier claimed that the Texas redistricting bill violates the Voting Rights Act and “will prevent black and brown individuals from selecting the candidates of their choice because they’re cracking and packing these districts.”
While Martin was speaking about 30 minutes into the call, Collier suddenly interrupted, saying, “Sorry, I have to leave. They said it’s a felony for me to do this.”
“Apparently I can’t be on the floor or in the bathroom,” she continued, before turning to address someone off camera.
“You told me I was only allowed to be here in the bathroom,” she told the person off camera before turning back to the call and saying, “No, hang on. Bye everybody. I’ve got to go.”
Both Newsom and Sen. Cory Booker, D-N.J., immediately expressed outrage over Collier’s sudden departure.
“That is outrageous,” said Booker. “Let me tell you something, Rep. Collier in the bathroom has more dignity than Donald Trump in the Oval Office.”
“There you go,” Newsom responded, nodding his head.
Collier is one of the Democrats who was sleeping on the House floor. While we don’t know what the rules are about taking calls from the House floor or the bathroom (!!!), clearly, she took the warning seriously and hung up, despite Newsom and Booker getting their panties in a wad.
In the end, the redistricting map passed the House, as we all knew it would. But the whining will not stop.
In a 88-52 party-line vote, Republican state lawmakers approved the newly drawn congressional map, which could net the GOP up to five additional seats in Congress ahead of the 2026 midterm election.
State Rep. Barbara Gervin-Hawkins (D), one of several Democrats who fled to Chicago prevent the House from establishing a quorum, accused Republicans of drawing up the new map “in the cloak of darkness” and not giving the Texas Legislative Black Caucus – which she said, “potentially will lose two seats” – a “role in this process.”
State Rep. Todd Hunter (R), the author of the bill, shot back: “You absolutely did … but you left 17 to 18 days.”
“Now you’re getting on the microphone saying, why didn’t I involve you? Well, I wasn’t going across state lines to find you. I was here,” Hunter continued.
“Don’t come into this body and say we didn’t include you – You left us for 18 days, and that’s wrong,” he later added.
In defense of the legality of the effort, Hunter argued that “redistricting can be done at any point in time.”
“The underlying goal of this plan is straightforward: improve Republican political performance,” he added, noting that he believes Supreme Court precedent is on his side.
Countering claims that minority Texas residents are being harmed by redistricting, Hunter noted that “four of the five new seats are hispanic majority … that’s a pretty strong message, and it’s good.”
Well, what happens now? The Texas Senate will vote on the map, and Governor Abbott will likely sign it into law by the end of the week. Which, according to Gavin Newsom and California Democrats, means all bets are off. Oh wait. I mean, ALL BETS ARE OFF. Newsom has turned his social media team into intentional Trump copycats for shits and giggles, but in the meantime, California Democrats are busy promoting their own redistricting map. Just please don’t ask them who drew the lines on the map. They want California voters to APPROVE it, not ask questions!
California State Senate Elections Committee Chair Sabrina Cervantes refuses to say who specifically is responsible for California’s proposed Congressional maps.

The California GOP tried challenging the map vote in the state Supreme Court on the grounds that the legislature violated the law regarding the 30 days required for a bill to be available for public review, but has now been told no. Will they get another chance at a more favorable ruling? Remember, there are three bills on the table that will allow California to have a special election, suspend the “independent” commission that the voters approved in 2020, and put forward the map that no one wants to claim credit for – and all three bills must be passed by this Friday. Polls vary, depending on the pollster – a Politico poll says California voters are against redistricting right now, while a Newsom-backed poll says that a majority are for it. While no one contested the legality of what Texas was doing, because that state leaves redistricting to the legislature, Newsom will have survive legal challenges AND a probable campaign battle in order to try and get what he wants.
Round one of the Redistricting Wars goes to Texas Republicans. Round two may go to California Democrats – but they need the voters to agree. Round three will be Ohio, which is legally required to redistrict AND has a veto-proof Republican majority. Be prepared for more wailing and gnashing of teeth from Democrats, because it is coming.
