The Trump administration is working to ensure federal taxpayer dollars do not end up in the hands of campus political activists.
The Department of Education announced Tuesday its plan to rescind Biden-era guidance allowing federal work study programs to bankroll political activism and to instead reorient them towards work experience.
“Federal Work Study is meant to provide students opportunities to gain real-world experience that prepares them to succeed in the workforce, not as a way to fund political activism on our college and university campuses,” Undersecretary of Education Nicolas Kent said in a statement.
“Under President Trump and Secretary McMahon’s leadership, the American taxpayer will no longer fund poll workers, voter hotlines, or political rallies on campus. We will also not require institutions to solicit students to register to vote if they know they are ineligible.”
Federal work study programs are meant to give students part-time employment to help them pay for college. Work study is supposed to encourage community service and work in a student’s preferred field of study.
The Education Department is also asking institutions to notify students that only U.S. citizens can vote in federal elections and voting multiple times is illegal. In addition, the agency is requesting schools tell students that it is illegal to provide false information for the purposes of vote registration and it is required in most states to register where a person is domiciled.
Educational institutions are legally mandated to make a “good faith” effort to distribute voter registration forms under the Higher Education Act of 1965. But the Trump administration is clarifying that this effort does not extend to students who are ineligible to vote in federal elections, namely foreign students.
By creating the new guidance, the Education Department is acting on President Donald Trump’s executive order signed in March authorizing agencies to take action to protect American elections from voter fraud.
