The Trump administration saw a major court victory that could help it fulfill the president’s promise to cope with the illegal immigration crisis swiftly and definitively.
President Donald Trump and his administration faced a lawsuit about a recently opened facility in Florida known as Alligator Alcatraz, notching a partial win this week, according to The Hill.
The suit, part of which was dismissed on Monday, was brought by detainees at the immigration detention center in the Everglades, and it challenged the center’s respect for the rights of detainees.
The plaintiffs made a civil rights claim, asking for the facility to ensure that those housed there have confidential access to attorneys and challenging some of its other practices impacting the legal process.
Judge rules
Miami-based U.S. District Judge Rodolfo Ruiz threw out the portion of the suit asserting that the government violated detainees’ Fifth Amendment rights.
He found no merit in the claim that it was unclear which immigration court had jurisdiction over the facility, a situation plaintiffs said deprived immigrants of the ability to file petitions.
The argument has been deemed moot, since the government has declared that the court at the Krome Detention Center in South Florida will oversee the detainees’ claims.
“The Court can do no more,” Ruiz wrote, washing his hands of that portion of the lawsuit. The other claims have not yet been settled.
Another facility prepares to open
Alagator Alcatraz isn’t the only shiny new facility to which immigrants may be sent, though, as the nation continues to reel from the massive number of illegal aliens who entered during the past administration, many of whom were prior criminal offenders.
The Department of Homeland Security, which is tasked with the job of removing illegal aliens, announced the opening of a new migrant detention facility in Nebraska, dubbed the “Cornhusker Clink.”
The facility, like the Florida encampment, will house “criminal illegal aliens,” who have been detained by ICE, and or DHS.

Whether the Nebraska facility will soon face legal challenges such as those lodged regarding the Florida center, only time will tell.
