Boston mayor refuses to cave to Bondi pressure

Ladies and gentlemen, we are about to have an old-fashioned showdown.

Attorney General Pam Bondi recently warned all sanctuary cities to remove protections for illegals or face the consequences.

While most mayors ignored the warning, Boston Mayor Michelle Wu responded, and we now appear to be ready to head to the Supreme Court to have this issue settled once and for all.

Kicking the Can Down the Road

This issue has come before the Supreme Court before, but it was not settled after Wilkinson v. City and County of San Francisco was dismissed.

I had always questioned why the Trump administration had not tried to tackle this issue earlier, as I had feared the Biden administration would block it.

As it turns out, as Trump’s administration was winding down, the case had not yet hit the docket, so a petition was filed to hold the case for consideration until the Biden administration decided how it would move forward.

And, as you might have guessed, the Biden administration wanted to dismiss the case, which was agreed upon by both sides, so the justices had no say.

Lessons Learned

When Trump took office the second time, Attorney General Pam Bondi filed suit on this front against New York almost immediately after taking office.

Now she is threatening the funding of sanctuary cities, stating, “But I just sent sanctuary city letters to 32 mayors around the country and multiple governors saying, ‘you better be abiding by our federal policies and with our federal law enforcement, because if you aren’t, we’re going to come after you.’

“And they have, I think, a week to respond to me, so let’s see who responds and how they respond.”

I just don’t see how the Democrats can win this case. Save very few exceptions, the Court has always ruled that immigration is a federal issue, so how can they possibly justify allowing Democrat cities to make laws that override that authority?

Let’s Dance

Bondi’s cuts got the attention of Boston’s controversial mayor.

Wu, who despite many public complaints continues to poll shockingly well in approval rate, responded, “At a time when this federal administration is already causing so much fear and harm in our communities, these threats are serious and consequential.”

Wu concluded, “This has always been a city of revolution, of innovation, of standing up for the public good and never bowing down to tyranny. With me today, our fellow public servants and veterans, public safety and faith leaders, civil rights advocates, and labor union members, teachers and business owners, entrepreneurs and artists, youth and seniors.”

If you read my reports regularly, you know this is something that I have been dying to see go before the court for some time, so I am looking forward to this getting into the system, where it will eventually go before the Supreme Court. Finally, we will get a ruling on the legality of sanctuary cities.
