In today’s Media Miss Minute, a joke President Donald Trump made about using a war to stay in power has fallen flat with many. And the Department of Housing and Urban Development has announced a big change that could impede the ability of immigrants who aren’t proficient in English to find homes.
Media Miss by the right: Trump jokes about using a war to stay in power after 2029
While hosting Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy at the White House, President Trump joked about elections and war – a moment left-leaning media seized on, but right-leaning outlets have mostly overlooked.
During the visit, Zelesnkyy was asked about elections in Ukraine. His term was supposed to end last year, but he’s stayed in office since his country is at war with Russia.
Reporter: Are you open to holding an election in your country?
Zelenskyy: Yes, of course. We are open, yes. We have to do it in safety circumstances, and a little bit, we need to work in the parliament because during the war you can’t have elections, but we can, we can do security. We need, we need a truce? Yes. Everywhere, the battlefield, in the sky and the sea, to make it possible for people to do democratic, open, legal, legal elections.
Trump: So let me just say, three and a half years from now, so, you mean, if we happen to be in a war with somebody, no more elections. Oh, that’s good. I wonder what the fake news is gonna say about that.
Zelenskyy: (laughs) You like this idea.
Media Miss by the left: Federal housing agency to issue English-only materials under Trump directive
Trump’s head of Housing and Urban Development announced Tuesday that his agency will now only use the English language.
Citing President Trump’s executive order making English the official language of the United States, Secretary Scott Turner said all HUD business and services will now solely be conducted in English. Until now, HUD touted that it accommodated more than 200 languages and had an interpretation line for individuals unable to speak English proficiently, according to The New York Post.
HUD will remove all non-English materials, subject to certain exceptions required by federal law.
