Hertz is joining forces with Amazon to sell pre-owned vehicles, expanding its retail footprint and giving millions of online shoppers access to its rental fleet. The company announced Wednesday it will sell used cars through Amazon Autos, the e-commerce giant’s vehicle marketplace.
How it works
Customers in Dallas, Houston, Los Angeles and Seattle will be the first to participate. Buyers within 75 miles of those cities can browse Hertz’s inventory online, e-sign paperwork and then pick up their car at a Hertz location.
The program is expected to expand to nearly 50 locations nationwide.
“Our goal is to reimagine the car-buying experience and meet customers where they are – whether online or in-person – with convenience, confidence and scale, “ said Jeff Adams, executive vice president of Hertz Car Sales.
Amazon’s auto push
Amazon launched its auto business in late 2024, initially offering Hyundai models for purchase. Earlier this month, it expanded into used and pre-owned cars, with Hertz becoming its first fleet dealer.

Hertz was forced to sell around 30,000 electric vehicles after failed investments, with a $2.9 billion loss reported in 2024.
Hertz already sells hundreds of thousands of vehicles annually through its Rent2Buy program, which lets customers test drive a car for three days before committing. The Amazon deal adds a new digital channel to accelerate those sales.
Hertz’s recovery efforts
The partnership comes as Hertz continues its financial turnaround. The company filed for bankruptcy in 2020 after travel collapsed during the pandemic and has struggled to regain its footing since. In 2024, Hertz reported a $2.9 billion loss, partly tied to a failed push into electric vehicles.
CEO Gil West has promised a “Back-to-Basics” strategy focused on the company’s core rental and car sale businesses. “I remain bullish on our core business and confident in our unique position as one of the world’s largest rental car companies and used car dealers,” he told employees earlier this year.
CNBC reports that West recently highlighted growing momentum in Hertz’s Rent2Buy program – momentum the Amazon partnership is designed to build on.
