House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries is rattling his saber again, this time threatening to drag Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem before Congress if Democrats retake the House.
“It’s my expectation that Kristi Noem will be one of the first people hauled up to Congress shortly after the gavels change hands to get a real understanding for the American people as to this conduct that has taken place,” Jeffries said in an interview with The Bulwark’s Tim Miller, released Monday.
The “conduct” Jeffries is railing against? Enforcing immigration law. The New York Democrat accused Noem of presiding over “the lack of respect for due process, for the rule of law, the unleashing of masked agents on law-abiding immigrant communities, and the disappearing of people — in some instances to other countries — without any real evidence that criminal behavior took place.”
Jeffries promised that “all of this is going to require aggressive Oversight activity,” a clear shot at the Trump administration’s aggressive deportation and enforcement push.
But critics say his threats amount to punishing Noem for doing her job.
“Make no mistake, Democrat politicians like Hakeem Jeffries, Mayor [Michelle] Wu of Boston, [Minnesota Gov.] Tim Walz, and Mayor [Karen] Bass of Los Angeles are contributing to the surge in assaults of our ICE officers through their repeated vilification and demonization of ICE,” said Assistant Homeland Security Secretary Tricia McLaughlin after a recent arson attack on an ICE facility in Washington state.
Noem has emerged as one of Trump’s strongest Cabinet allies on immigration, spearheading new wall construction, mass deportation operations, and the hotly debated plan to paint sections of the border wall black to make it “almost impossible” to climb. The administration boasts of three straight months of zero illegal crossings — a historic low.
LMAO! Democrats are currently losing their minds over President Trump and Kristi Noem painting the southern border wall BLACK to let it get super hot from the sun.
It’s being done so the criminals would burn their hands to the touch if they even tried.
Genius move.

Jeffries’ remarks are the latest reminder of his favorite political theater trick: the “magic minute.” Just six weeks ago, he set a record with an 8-hour-and-44-minute floor speech lambasting Trump’s budget. It changed no votes and accomplished little besides giving CSPAN viewers a test of endurance. That “filibuster-but-not” ended with Trump’s spending plan passing anyway.
Now, Jeffries is flexing again, promising that if Democrats retake power, they’ll put Noem and DHS in the flood lights. Republicans argue the only thing that will come of it is hours of grandstanding by Democrats like Reps. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Rashida Tlaib, and Jasmine Crockett — the kind of viral moments that play well on MSNBC but not on Main Street.
Supporters of Trump’s crackdown are practically daring Democrats to try it. A showdown between Noem and House progressives, they argue, would be a gift to Republicans heading into 2026.
“Please, please, please give Noem a chance to get ‘hauled up to Congress,’” one GOP strategist said. “Every time Democrats attack ICE agents, it reminds Americans which party is standing up for law and order.”
And then there’s the credibility problem. Jeffries has already burned political capital with his marathon floor speeches that end in failure. His threat to “haul up” Noem is being seen by many as another hollow gesture — a flex from the man Republicans mockingly call “Dollar Store Obama.”
Jeffries may see himself as preparing for a triumphant return to the Speaker’s chair. But for voters watching the border crisis vanish under Trump and Noem’s policies, it’s another reminder of which party cracked down on chaos and which one promises to put ICE agents back in the crosshairs.
