Three young children led police on Monday to the bodies of their parents, who had apparently died in a murder-suicide.
Houston Police say the 26-year-old father shot the 26-year-old mother before killing himself, KHOU reported. Their names have not been released.
Police were called to the apartment complex in west Houston just after 5 p.m. on Monday and found the children, ages 3, 2, and 1, being tended by neighbors who said the kids had been sitting outside in the heat for hours and were hungry and looking for food.
The kids, who were not physically harmed, told officers their parents were dead inside the apartment.
Lt. Larry Crowson told KHOU that the parents had probably been dead for about 24 hours. The children are now in the custody of their grandmother, he said, and Child Protective Services is investigating.
One neighbor, Deborah McMillan, indicated to KTRK that the family had domestic issues.
“She came over a few times, asking to use the phone. I would talk to her, try to tell her, ‘Hey, it’s not worth it,’” said McMillan, a domestic violence survivor herself. “Her main thing is that she didn’t want to leave because of the kids.”
The kids, she said, “you could tell they were hungry and thirsty” when neighbors found them outside.
“The oldest one is who hurts me the most because she was vivid in details of what she had witnessed with her parents,” she added.
“Don’t think this is your only way to live, to stay in a situation like this. It’s not, believe me,” she said. “I survived. I’m out. I’m healthy, living, loving.”
