Less than three months after its debut, Elon Musk’s “America Party” appears to be on hold.
According to a report from The Wall Street Journal, Musk has allegedly told associates he wants to focus on his businesses and avoid launching a party that could pull support away from Republicans.
The billionaire has also reportedly worked to maintain a close relationship with Vice President JD Vance, considered the leading figure in the MAGA movement. Sources told WSJ that Musk expressed concern a new political party could damage that relationship.
For now, the plan is paused. However, Musk’s allies said he has not fully ruled out the idea and could revisit it as the 2026 midterms draw closer.
Musk’s political activity had been ramping up earlier this year. After working with the Department of Government Efficiency, his stint at the Trump White House ended on May 30. Though his departure seemed amicable, tensions with Trump flared almost immediately.
Days later, Musk criticized the administration on X, the social platform he owns, blasting a spending package supported by Trump.
“I’m sorry, but I just can’t stand it anymore,” Musk wrote. “This massive, outrageous, pork-filled Congressional spending bill is a disgusting abomination. Shame on those who voted for it: you know you did wrong. You know it.”
The criticism didn’t stop there. Musk posted memes and sharp commentary aimed at the administration, saying his opposition was rooted in excessive government spending.
By June 5, Musk was openly musing about creating a new party. He posted a poll on X, asking followers if one was needed. The next day, he declared, “the people have spoken. A new political party is needed in America to represent the 80% in the middle!”
A similar poll followed on July 4, the same day Trump signed the spending bill Musk had opposed. Musk framed it as a question of independence from the two-party system. This time, 65.4% of respondents voted yes, down from 80.4% in June.
Still, Musk pressed forward, announcing, “the America Party is formed to give you back your freedom.”
Trump responded sharply. On July 6, he wrote on Truth Social: “I am saddened to watch Elon Musk go completely ‘off the rails,’ essentially becoming a TRAIN WRECK over the past five weeks. He even wants to start a third political party, despite the fact that they have never succeeded in the United States – The system seems not designed for them.”
Since then, the public feud has cooled. Musk dialed back his criticism, and by late July, Trump appeared to soften his tone as well.
“Everyone is stating that I will destroy Elon’s companies by taking away some, if not all, of the large-scale subsidies he receives from the U.S. government. This is not so!” Trump wrote. “I want Elon, and all businesses within our country, to THRIVE, in fact, THRIVE like never before! The better they do, the better the USA does, and that’s good for all of us.”
