Congressman Kevin Kiley (R-CA) continues pushing for legislation that would halt redistricting efforts across the nation, even as his own political future hangs in the balance.
Gov. Gavin Newsom announced plans to eliminate five Republican-controlled districts in California, putting Kiley’s seat directly in jeopardy.
The move comes as the Golden State already ranks among the most heavily gerrymandered in the country.
Resist the Mainstream previously reported that Kiley introduced federal legislation earlier this month designed to prevent states from redrawing congressional boundaries before the 2030 census.
His bill emerged amid ongoing Republican redistricting initiatives across multiple states.
Texas Republicans advanced plans to create five additional districts that Donald Trump carried by double-digit margins in the previous election.
The Lone Star State moves forward after House Democrats concluded what Republicans characterized as an illegal blockade by returning to participate in legislative proceedings.
Multiple Republican-controlled states are pursuing similar redistricting strategies.
Missouri, Ohio, Indiana and Florida are all considering or actively planning map changes that could benefit conservative candidates.
Republican leaders justify these redistricting efforts by pointing to extreme gerrymandering in Democratic strongholds.
They specifically cite California, Illinois and Maryland as examples of states where liberal politicians manipulated district boundaries for partisan advantage.
The GOP also references controversial census counting issues that allegedly benefited Democratic states.
Trending Politics (TP) highlighted that according to Republican claims, the census overcounted populations in California, New York, Rhode Island, Minnesota, and Delaware while undercounting residents in Arkansas, Tennessee, Texas, Florida and Mississippi.
These alleged counting errors resulted in 14 additional congressional seats and electoral votes for Democratic-controlled states, per Republican calculations.
Despite these concerns, Kiley opposes efforts to address the census discrepancies through redistricting.
The California congressman maintains his position against mid-decade map changes regardless of partisan considerations.
“You have politicians saying ‘oh, we’re going to defeat these people not through having a free and fair election but just by moving some lines around on a map.’ California voters very clearly said that’s not the way it should be done,” Kiley stated in a recent interview outlined by TP.
House Speaker Mike Johnson criticized Newsom’s redistricting proposal on Monday.
The Louisiana Republican attacked the plan as an attempt to disenfranchise California voters through partisan manipulation.
Current California congressional maps already heavily favor Democrats despite more competitive statewide voting patterns.
Republicans hold just nine of 52 available seats while receiving approximately 40 percent of the vote in recent elections, per TP.
Newsom’s proposed maps would reduce Republican representation even further.
Under the new boundaries, the GOP would control only four congressional seats statewide.
Johnson characterized the redistricting plan as a product of Washington interference rather than local California input.
“Gavin Newsom’s latest attempt to disenfranchise millions of California voters was written in the dark of night by the DCCC—more than 2,700 miles away from Sacramento in Washington. This is a slap in the face to Californians who overwhelmingly support the California Citizens Redistricting Commission,” Johnson declared.
The Speaker referenced polling data suggesting California voters oppose the redistricting proposal.
Kiley responded to Johnson’s criticism by demanding concrete action rather than statements.
“Mr. Speaker, these are nice words but we need action. You can stop Newsom’s Redistricting Sham and save our taxpayers $250 million by bringing my mid-decade redistricting bill to the Floor,” the congressman wrote.
Despite Kiley’s persistent advocacy, his proposed ban on mid-decade redistricting faces dim prospects for a floor vote.
House leadership has shown little indication of scheduling the legislation for consideration.
Missouri Republicans are preparing to convene a special legislative session focused on redistricting.
Their plans specifically target elimination of a Democrat-controlled district through boundary changes.
Ohio is beginning its regularly scheduled redistricting process, which political observers expect will produce at least two additional Republican-safe seats.
