The amazing Grants Pass-based Supreme Court case last year opened the door wide for government to actually enforce trespassing laws. One city, San Fransisco, took that ruling and began to enforce their laws. Because of this, the city now has 1,000 fewer homeless tents.
The number of homeless tents on the streets of San Francisco has fallen to its lowest level since before the COVID-19 pandemic. In June, the city recorded 165 tents and tent-like structures, marking a reduction of approximately 25% from the last count in March 2025, which showed 220 tents. Over the past five years, this number has drastically decreased by around 85%, from a peak of 1,108 in April 2020.
This is a lesson for Portland.
Enforcing the laws can work!
Portland can make life safe and sanitary for people to walk their streets and visit their parks.
Remember, homeless have homes.
