A Virginia school district where a high school took teenage girls for secret abortions will lose taxpayer funding thanks to the Trump administration.
The Department of Education (DOE) plans to cut federal funding from five Northern Virginia school districts. Although the decision comes after they refused to change policies allowing boys to use girls’ bathrooms and locker rooms, the defunding includes the district that facilitated the secret abortions. Officials at Fairfax County’s Centerville High School arranged and bankrolled abortions for girls without so much as a phone call to their parents back in 2021.
The Office of Civil Rights (OCR) issued a July 25 statement warning that policies in Fairfax County, Loudoun County, Arlington County, Prince William County, and the City of Alexandria violate Title IX, which prohibits discrimination on the basis of sex in federally funded education programs.

OCR gave the districts 10 days to change their policies or face enforcement. However, by August 15 all five districts said they would not comply so a DOE spokesperson confirmed that the agency will now move to suspend the districts’ federal aid.
Fairfax stands to lose up to $160 million in federal funding.
In that district, a Northern Virginia high school staff member sidestepped Virginia’s parental consent law to enable a minor girl to get an abortion. The allegations have been simmering for three years in Fairfax County but only made national headlines last week! Regardless of their personal opinions about abortion, it set alarm bells ringing in the minds of Virginia parents.
In response to the rapidly developing story, Virginia Governor Glenn Youngkin called for a full investigation by the State Police. Parents all over Virginia need to know how this may have happened and whether it is still happening.
“I am deeply concerned with the allegations that Fairfax County Public Schools officials arranged for minors to get abortions without parental consent and may have misused public funds to pay for them,” Gov. Youngkin said. “I am directing the Virginia State Police Bureau of Criminal Investigation to open a full criminal investigation into the matter immediately.”
The high school reportedly knew about the abortions years ago but did nothing.
Olivia Gans Turner of the Virginia Society for Human Life, condemned the school:
Parents should be able to trust school staff to respect their rights to be involved when their own children face critical life decisions. Minock’s account that attracted broad commentary online and in the mainstream media is shocking for many reasons.
Did a school social worker keep the girls’ pregnancies secret from their parents and guardians? Did she counsel these minor girls about how to get an abortion? Did the staff member pay for the abortions with school funds? Most alarming, did school administrators know about the abortions and collude to cover them up?

The unfortunate fact is that, although Virginia does have a parental consent law in place, there have long been concerns raised by parents’ groups that it may not be followed.
Beyond the immediate story, there is an even more nightmarish threat to Virginia parents’ right to know before their minor daughters can get an abortion.
That is a proposed so-called “Right to Reproductive Freedom” Amendment, which will make unlimited abortion up to birth a part of the Virginia Constitution. This threatens to eliminate not only the current parental consent law but also prevent any legitimate oversight of how abortions are practiced in Virginia in the future.
The amendment passed its first step during the 2025 General Assembly session. It must pass again in 2026, but that depends on the 2025 elections. A shift in the majority in the House of Delegates could prevent second passage which will stop this effort of abortion proponents who are determined to make Virginia the abortion capital of the south.
