WASHINGTON — A fire broke out today on the amphibious warship New Orleans (LPD-18) while it was operating off the coast of Japan, local media reported.
Japan’s Coast Guard assisted the crew with firefighting activities around 5 p.m. local time (4 a.m. Washington, DC time), according to Japanese broadcaster NHK.
“Crews are responding to a fire aboard USS New Orleans (LPD 18) this evening, Aug. 20, (Japan Time) which is in the vicinity of Okinawa, Japan. We will provide more details as they become available,” according to a Navy spokesman.
New Orleans is a San Antonio-class amphibious transport dock capable of deploying Marine Corps ship-to-shore transport assets as well as CH-46 Sea Knight helicopters and MV-22 Ospreys.
The extent of the damage is currently unknown.
