A senior Russian lawmaker has issued a stark warning in response to President Donald Trump’s decision to move two U.S. nuclear submarines near Russian territory.
Russia’s response

Viktor Vodolatsky, the first deputy chairman of the Russian State Duma’s Defense Committee, claimed that Moscow has a greater nuclear submarine presence than Washington — and made it clear Russia is ready to respond. “There are significantly more of our [nuclear] submarines in the world’s oceans, [and they] have the strongest, most powerful weapons,” he warned. “This is why, [we] let [Trump’s] two boats float, they have been at gunpoint for a long time.”
Escalating tension

Vodolatsky’s recent comments came after Trump announced on Truth Social that two U.S. nuclear submarines had been repositioned to “appropriate regions” near Russia. The move appears to be a direct response to recent tensions between the U.S. and Moscow, despite Trump’s historically warm stance toward Russian President Vladimir Putin.
Ukraine v.s. Russia

The shift in tone follows Trump’s latest warning to Putin. If Russia does not agree to a ceasefire in Ukraine, he will impose a new round of economic sanctions. Former Russian President Dmitry Medvedev, now serving as Moscow’s de facto military chief, responded by calling Trump’s warning “a step towards war.” Wrote Medvedev, “Trump’s playing the ultimatum game with Russia. … Each new ultimatum is a threat and a step towards war. Not between Russia and Ukraine, but with his own country.”
Trump’s public warning

Soon after, Trump doubled down by publicizing the submarine move: “I have ordered two Nuclear Submarines to be positioned in the appropriate regions, just in case these foolish and inflammatory statements are more than just that,” he wrote, later adding, “Words are very important, and can often lead to unintended consequences, I hope this will not be one of those instances.”
