YHWH here expands on His view of how His children should deal with blood. He describes the substance as sacred—the source of life—but also, if mishandled, as defiling. The origins of kashrut—dietary purity—derive from this chapter, among others. YHWH thus reminds His children that they are not animals or pagans, who eat anything killed in any manner, but that He wishes them to have a thoughtful and civilized relationship to the animals they kill and eat, and to their own bodies.
