House Republicans are moving to put former President Donald Trump’s name forward for the Nobel Peace Prize. The push is tied to his ongoing role in talks surrounding the Russia-Ukraine war.
Rep. Andy Ogles of Tennessee is leading the effort, joined by Indiana Rep. Marlin Stutzman. Together, they are submitting Trump’s nomination to the Nobel Committee this week.
The lawmakers point to Trump’s recent summit with Russian President Vladimir Putin, followed by his meeting with European leaders, including Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, as evidence of his peacemaking influence.
“We respectfully submit this nomination of President Donald J. Trump for the Nobel Peace Prize, in recognition of his concrete contributions to international fraternity, his leadership in reducing conflict and the risk of war, and his commitment to fostering dialogue as a path toward reconciliation,” Ogles and Stutzman wrote in their letter.
They credited Trump with “decisive leadership” that helped secure diplomatic breakthroughs, ease global tensions, and push for peaceful resolutions in conflicts that many thought could not be resolved.
“His decisive leadership in securing landmark diplomatic agreements, de-escalating global conflicts, and actively pursuing peaceful resolutions to some of the world’s most entrenched disputes has led and continues to lead to a more peaceful world,” the lawmakers added.
The Nobel Committee receives hundreds of nominations each year from around the globe, but only a few make the shortlist for serious consideration. Whether Trump’s bid advances remains to be seen.
