Snarky repeats of the same timeline by California Gov. Gavin Newsom’s (D) troll account weren’t enough to buck the blame over a fatal Florida crash.
Tragedy in the Sunshine State left three people dead and an illegal alien facing vehicular homicide charges following an attempted unlawful U-turn on the Florida Turnpike. As the once-Golden State was faulted for issuing the commercial driver’s license, attempts by the Governor Newsom Press Office account to steer clear of accountability were met with fact checks from the Department of Homeland Security.
A particularly scathing rebuke was delivered by DHS Assistant Secretary for Public Affairs Tricia McLaughlin after the GovPressOffice account faulted President Donald Trump’s administration for issuing a work permit.
“False. Harjinder Singh is in the United States illegally and his work authorization was rejected under the Trump Administration on September 14, 2020. It was later approved under the Biden Administration June 9, 2021,” wrote the DHS spokeswoman in response to the account arguing, “Hey, genius: the federal government (TRUMP ADMIN) already confirmed that this guy meets federal and state immigration requirements — YOU issued him a work permit (EAD). As usual, the Trump Administration is either lying or clueless….”
McLaughlin concluded her point by adding, “The state of California issues Commercial Drivers Licenses. There is no national CDL. Sincerely, Genius.”

Newsom’s troll account shared the same timeline in response to DHS Secretary Kristi Noem, referring to her as “Commander Cosplay,” and emphasizing that he only became governor in January 2019 without a reminder that his current position followed eight years as lieutenant governor under then-Gov Gov. Jerry Brown (D).
Noem said, “3 innocent people were killed in Florida because Gavin Newsom’s California DMV issued an illegal alien a Commercial Driver’s License. This gut wrenching tragedy should have never happened. My team at @DHSgov will work with @USDOT to root out and prevent illegal aliens from obtaining these licenses from sanctuary jurisdictions that put American drivers and passengers in danger.”

In attempting to counter McLaughlin, the GovPressOffice account shared the headline of a San Francisco Chronicle article that also claimed the “White House had gotten key facts wrong” and wrote, “Once again, an EPIC FAIL by the White House.”
That post followed an earlier response to the spokeswoman that included screenshots of details about the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration that did not refute the key point that California had issued the CDL and read, “Thank you for confirming that the federal government issued him a work permit and you FAILED to revoke it! Is Kowgirl Kristi asleep at the at reins? [sic] Here’s some basic info, that even Grok knows …”

Worth noting, earlier this year, the president reinstated a requirement that English literacy be proven to operate a commercial motor vehicle in the United States.
