I admit it — I have an addiction. To my phone.
But who cares? I’m old. We worry about this happening to kids. But are kids actually being hurt?
Experts are divided on that question.
Psychologist Jonathan Haidt, author of The Anxious Generation, points out “attention spans are declining,” and since smartphones were introduced, rates of anxiety and depression have “gone up. Way up.”
Sounds terrible, and it’s why Haidt wants phones banned in schools and age limits on social media.
But others, like Chris Ferguson, professor of psychology at Stetson University, argue that bans would be harmful. They say the uproar over kids and phones is just another moral panic, like comic books and video games.
Who’s right? Watch and decide for yourself!
