Brace yourselves, Texas — Attorney General Ken Paxton just unleashed a fiery critique of Senator John Cornyn that’s sure to stir debate across the state.
On Breitbart News Saturday, hosted by Matthew Boyle, Paxton accused the veteran Republican senator of becoming a Washington insider, out of touch with Texas values, while failing to show meaningful results after 23 years in the U.S. Senate, as Breitbart reports.
Paxton, who’s gearing up to challenge Cornyn in a primary for his Senate seat, noted that Cornyn is aiming for a fifth term — a milestone Paxton claims no Texas senator has ever reached.
Paxton challenges Cornyn’s Texas roots
“He’s been in office since I’ve been in college, and I’m 62 years old,” Paxton remarked, framing Cornyn as a long-entrenched D.C. figure.
That’s more than a dig at tenure; it’s a nudge to question what’s been achieved in all that time. Paxton insists Cornyn puts Washington’s interests ahead of Texas’ needs.
“He takes care of Washington, he doesn’t talk about his record,” Paxton added, hinting that the senator’s silence might stem from a lack of notable wins to discuss.
Gun control debate takes center stage
Paxton didn’t shy away from spotlighting Cornyn’s role in gun control legislation, signed into law by President Joe Biden on June 25, 2022. Just two weeks later, Biden singled out Cornyn by name during a White House event praising the bill.
Strangely, Cornyn later said he couldn’t recall collaborating with Democrats on this measure. For a senator with decades of experience, such a memory gap raises questions — legislative tracks aren’t so easily erased.
Chris McNutt of Texas Gun Rights chimed in, saying, “Perhaps at 73, Cornyn is starting to share more than just policy blunders with Biden.” That’s a gentle yet sharp reminder that voters won’t forget policy missteps.
Immigration policies draw scrutiny
Turning to border issues, Paxton criticized Cornyn for seemingly suggesting amnesty as a solution to immigration challenges. Cornyn, a vocal supporter of employment-based immigration, reportedly floated pushing an immigration bill in June 2022, according to Breitbart News.
Such stances often unsettle conservatives who prioritize strict border enforcement. Paxton’s concern isn’t merely about policy — it’s a call for representation that mirrors Texas’ focus on security.
Paxton also accused Cornyn of resisting President Donald Trump’s border wall efforts. In 2017, Cornyn voiced doubts, stating, “I think he’s speaking metaphorically.”
Border wall clash reveals deep rift
That skepticism doesn’t resonate well in a state grappling with border concerns. Paxton argues Cornyn’s stance on the wall highlights a gap between the senator and Texans who view barriers as vital for safety.
From gun laws to immigration and the border wall, these disputes underscore Paxton’s broader claim that Cornyn has veered from conservative principles. It’s not just about differing views; it’s about whether Cornyn still embodies Texas’ core values after over two decades in D.C.
As this primary fight looms, Paxton’s pointed words challenge Cornyn to justify his long record. Texas voters face a choice between a seasoned D.C. player and a contender promising to prioritize the state — after all, actions carry weight.
