The Anchorage summit between President Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin may go down as one of the most significant diplomatic moments in recent years—but you wouldn’t know it by watching MSNBC.
Instead of grappling with the real stakes of peace negotiations, Democrats and their media allies have reverted to the same tired talking points that have defined their rhetoric since 2016: Russia hysteria, name-calling, and baseless insinuations of treason. Leading the charge this time was none other than Rep. Eric Swalwell, who denounced Trump as a “Kremlin kiss ass” and suggested the entire summit was staged to distract from domestic issues like inflation and the Epstein files.
This is classic misdirection. Swalwell and his colleagues can’t admit what millions of Americans plainly see: that Donald Trump, for all his bluntness, is the only U.S. leader in recent memory actively working to end a war rather than fuel one.
The Anchorage meeting wasn’t about symbolism or flattery; it was about creating conditions for talks with Ukraine’s Volodymyr Zelenskyy and setting the table for a possible trilateral negotiation. That’s not appeasement—it’s statesmanship.
Yet, Swalwell doubled down, reaching back to the old Helsinki comparison and recycling the baseless “Russian asset” smear that Robert Mueller’s multi-year probe already debunked.
This brand of political theater is not just reckless—it’s insulting to the American people, who remember full well what Trump’s first term produced: strengthened NATO contributions, U.S. energy independence, and, notably, no new wars. Compare that to the Biden years, which saw Afghanistan collapse into chaos, Europe plunged into its largest land war since 1945, and adversaries emboldened worldwide.
Swalwell’s attack highlights the Democrats’ deeper problem. They have no coherent plan for resolving the Russia-Ukraine conflict. They talk tough, they throw sanctions, they grandstand on television—but none of it has stopped the bloodshed.
Meanwhile, Trump is willing to sit down with the adversaries themselves, however unpleasant, because that is the only path to a genuine resolution. Peace is not achieved by shouting into cameras—it’s hammered out at the negotiation table.
The Anchorage summit showed that Trump is prepared to do the hard work of diplomacy. The Democrats’ response showed they are more interested in preserving a narrative than saving lives. And that contrast, in the end, is what will matter most to voters who are tired of endless wars and endless excuses.
