Media Miss on the right: Florida judge weighs pause on Alligator Alcatraz expansion amid Everglades concerns
As the Trump administration continues its efforts to detain and deport unauthorized immigrants living in the United States, environmental groups and the Miccosukee Tribe are fighting plans to open a detention center in the Florida Everglades known as Alligator Alcatraz.
A federal judge is set to decide this week if construction can move forward after it was put on a 14-day pause while she weighed the case.
The plaintiffs argue that the construction could negatively impact nearby wetlands and pose a threat to wildlife there, including endangered species like the Florida panther. They also say the federal government failed to conduct the necessary environmental assessments before approving the expansion of a defunct airfield into the detention center.
The judge is set to decide whether those claims merit further legal action and if additional environmental review is needed.

Media Miss on the left: US judge blocks Trump religious exemption to birth control coverage
A U.S. district judge in Philadelphia has struck down a religious exemption added to the Affordable Care Act during President Donald Trump’s first administration.
The exemptions protected religious organizations from being forced to provide contraception coverage to their employees, as required under the ACA. But last Wednesday, District Judge Wendy Beetlestone ruled that the exemption’s vast scope didn’t match the small number of affected employers and vacated the exemptions.
Groups impacted by the change are likely to appeal the decision.
