President Donald Trump announced a sweeping effort to eliminate mail-in voting and voting machines from U.S. elections, citing concerns over election integrity as the 2026 midterm elections approach.
In posts on Truth Social, Trump wrote, “I am going to lead a movement to get rid of MAIL-IN BALLOTS,” and criticized voting machines as “Highly ‘Inaccurate,’ Very Expensive, and Seriously Controversial… which cost Ten Times more than accurate and sophisticated Watermark Paper, which is faster, and leaves NO DOUBT, at the end of the evening, as to who WON, and who LOST, the Election.”
Trump argued that these tools compromise the reliability of American elections.
“ELECTIONS CAN NEVER BE HONEST WITH MAIL IN BALLOTS/VOTING, and everybody, IN PARTICULAR THE DEMOCRATS, KNOWS THIS. I, AND THE REPUBLICAN PARTY, WILL FIGHT LIKE HELL TO BRING HONESTY AND INTEGRITY BACK TO OUR ELECTIONS. THE MAIL-IN BALLOT HOAX… MUST END, NOW!!!” he added.
The president also stressed federal oversight in election processes, declaring, “Remember, the States are merely an ‘agent’ for the Federal Government in counting and tabulating the votes.”
“They must do what the Federal Government, as represented by the President of the United States, tells them, FOR THE GOOD OF OUR COUNTRY, to do.”
Support from Republican allies has been immediate. Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) shared her endorsement on X.
“I strongly support President Trump in ending mail in voting!! Elections have been stolen for decades with this practice that is ripe for fraud,” she wrote. “Save America by saving our elections!!!”
Conservatives have long pushed for tougher rules on mail-in ballots, arguing the system is vulnerable to fraud and undermines election integrity.
Meanwhile, Democrats have largely dismissed these concerns as a conspiracy theory, claiming that mail-in voting is safe and crucial for voter access.
Data from the U.S. Election Assistance Commission shows nearly one-third of ballots in the 2024 presidential election were cast by mail, lower than the 43 percent seen in 2020 but higher than pre-pandemic years.
Critics argue mail-in voting has not been linked to widespread fraud, though Trump and supporters contend it remains vulnerable to manipulation, according to The Hill.
Legal obstacles have already arisen. In June, a Massachusetts federal judge blocked a March executive order that would have prevented states from counting ballots postmarked by Election Day but received later, Trending Politics reports.
Judge Denise Casper, an Obama appointee, ruled Trump lacked the authority to impose rules on state elections.
The push comes amid broader concerns over mail-in voting and alleged election irregularities.
The news comes as Abu Musa, a Hamtramck, Michigan, city councilman, allegedly appeared on video handing off large bundles of absentee ballots ahead of a primary election, which he won.
Framing the issue as essential to national security, Trump warned, “REMEMBER, WITHOUT FAIR AND HONEST ELECTIONS, AND STRONG AND POWERFUL BORDERS, YOU DON’T HAVE EVEN A SEMBLANCE OF A COUNTRY. THANK YOU FOR YOUR ATTENTION TO THIS MATTER!!!”
The president’s campaign to eliminate mail-in ballots and voting machines marks a new front in his broader effort to reform U.S. elections, with allies and critics alike preparing for a heated debate in the lead-up to the 2026 midterms.
